All About Books discussion

I dropped out of two groups for just that reason. Everyday my in box was full of authors promoting their books. And as you said Jean they would break into discussions, such as the what did you just read? They would say if you liked that book, you would like my new novel. I like this group and the other few I am in because they don't allow this to happen.

According to the member list, Shirley, Rowena, Becca, Laura T are members since 6th August, 2013 and Jenny is a member since 7th August, 2013.

Yes, I think the first non-mod members joined on the 11th, so I guess this is when we officially opened the group.

That's right! I'm so happy about all the work we've done - and with "we" I mean all of us - and where we've arrived... And where we are going to!

I checked the 'date joined' link in the members bit and since a lot of us joined on the 12th August, I was thinking we can do the celebrations over a couple of days in case life gets in the way, there would be a better chance more people can take part.

Well I definitely joined as soon as I logged on when I got up that day! And it was 12th.

But then a few posts earlier I noticed that Gill said she had done the same thing (and I know she's also in England UK) on 11th. So at that point I decided Goodreads must be somehow messing around with Greenwich mean time...

Everything on GR runs on Pacific time US including the date you joined a group.

That makes sense of it then, because the time I joined is given as 11pm on the 11th, but I know it was early in the morning. Also I remember it was a Monday, which makes it the 12th.

It comes up every year on January 1st that people in other countries can't set-up their yearly challenge until after midnight PST.

Ah, but only conceptually, according to the intention of some of the moderators, as we can see that Goodreads themselves recorded it as 11th. Did you realise that this was going to develop into a philosophical discussion? LOL!

The "actual" day it started is impossible to determine. For Europeans it will be 12th, for Americans it will be 11th and so on!

Who actually "clicked the button" as it were, and what country were they in?

I am a MOD for another group and was wonder how to send out a message to the rest of the group members and how to create a poll?

If you go to Members (click on it on the right), as a moderator you should be able to broadcast a message to all members... it is way down at the bottom of the page.

For polls, you don't need to be a moderator (well, depends on the group settings) but just click on the Polls link on the right and then click on new.

Are you intending to change the rules for this group then, mods, as with the current settings members can't actually create polls here.

Just asking for info - I tried to create one a while back for one of the Daphne du Mauriers, and wondered again with the Mysteries thread, when Shirley suggested it, but it still won't enable me :)

I can people using the polls for self-promotion. They can be very sneaky.

No plans to change it here, but in some of my other groups members can make polls. I was really intending this for Janessa so that she could check her group settings...

I wasn't going to come back on this thread until I had another question, but just to say, I think there is a special group just for moderators, which you might find helpful to join. Perhaps one of the mods here could provide a link to it?

No worries Janessa! If you've opened a thread you go to 'edit' (on the right next to thread name) and tick the box called ' close this topic for new posts & votes'. When setting up a poll it gives you the option to hide, so you just tick that box as you set up.

Borough Press are doing a social media campaign where they are asking people to post a book a day on twitter for the month of June. They have a question each day and are asking for photos of favourite books.

It's a bit similar to our reading journey but I thought it might be fun to set up a discussion thread for this on the group? What do you guys think? I'd be happy to post the new question each day

That sounds like fun, but it will be an awful lot of different threads...I'm not sure what would be the best way to do it?

Couldn't the questions all go in the same thread?

We could have one thread for it and mark the date in bold for the question posts and then answer on the day. If this get's too messy we'd have to go for a folder with individual threads, my only concern is: would it make our reading journey superfluous?

I was thinking of only have one thread with bd titles. It's only for a month. But that's why I asked here rather than just setting it up. The other questions are quite different and don't follow the reading journey exactly

Depends on what you have, is it fiction or non-fiction? There are separate threads titled What have you read? - either Fiction or Non - Fiction.
