Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) You'll give Randy a task?
Good luck with that.
I'm lucky if I can pull him away from his RPG's and Television addiction long enough to get him to reply to my emails and book rec's.
:-)

So humble.
You may make the world tremble at your step.
BUT I make them run, screaming, "Oh my God! Oh my God! She's loose! Call 911"

You have no idea how BIG I am...physically. In other places, my nickname is Ogre.

I would bet I am taller and heavier than 99.9% of the population. When I used to drive a car, I broke several car seats. :(

That tank thing looks scarier than a fast walking Zombie!
I'm not sure if it has WiFi connection for all of my e-toys. A girl's gotta have access to her kindle books if she's gonna survive the guy fantasy fulfillment of the zombie apocalypse.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Hey guys,

How about we start the reading of Desolation on Friday, November 1st 2013. The Day of the Dead, which should be our groups official holiday
:-)
There are 31 chapters total.
The book is divided into 3 parts.

Part one : Infernal , consist of chapters 1-9 and goes to page 58 ( kindle location 769 ish). 58 reading pages

Part two : Necrosis, consists of chapter 10 -19 and goes to page 150 (kindle location 2205 ish). 92 reading pages

Part three: The Hiving of Refuge, consists of chapters 20 -31 and goes to the last page 220 (kindle location 3198 or 99%). 70 reading pages.

The last couple pages are author bio stuff

How do you all feel about having the pre-divided sections (parts) be the reading assignments?

How do you all feel about this pace
One day to read followed by one day to chat ?

Read part one November 1st
Discuss part one November 2nd

Read part two November 3rd
Discuss part two November 4th

Read part three November 5th
Discuss part three November 6th

That gives you a full day of reading and you can join in on the discussion either on the discussion day or the next reading day based on your own reading speed.

Let me know if you would like the read/discussion to be broke up differently.

message 62: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Tammy....I think that's a good breakdown. Plus, if its broke into parts already, we should probably follow it, 'cause I'm sure the author broke it up like that on purpose. My ONLY problem is that I work 36 hours between the 1st, 2nd & 3rd: 2pm-close (2A.M OR 3A.M. if we still have players), same on Saturday. And Sunday is 12:30P.M.- 12:00A.M. (OR up to 3A.M. if we have players). I wouldn't be worried about having time BUT, being the first of the month, people get their SSI checks and SSDI checks and spend it ALL in the video poker machines, so I almost ALWAYS get stuck late around the 1st couple days of the month. Still, as long as its okay with the group if I post my thoughts on the first section on,say, the 3rd, I foresee no problem. I'm off after that til the 5th, so no probs there. So, I guess I'm saying...YEAH, GIRL! PERFECT!!! (for the most part :-P) As long as its good with everyone else, that is...

message 63: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Tammy -- The breakdown works for me.

Again, I'll suggest we have three different discussion threads:

Desolation buddy read (spoilers), 33%
Desolation buddy read (spoilers), 66%
Desolation buddy read (spoilers), 100%

Then it should be easier to jump into the discussion as each person progresses to those points. Someone that is faster doesn't need to wait to make their comments, since it can't spoil things for anyone else -- they shouldn't be in that topic if they haven't gotten that far.

message 64: by Tammy K. (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Randy,
I'd like to try having 3 different discussion threads for the book, but in truth I do not know how to set that up.
I can start a thread for the main buddy reading assignments no problem. However creating sub-threads for each discussion day under that main part is where I get stuck.
If anyone knows how to create sub-threads please feel free to share.

message 65: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Tammy -- I set up the three topics. Let me know if you'd like something changed. All three topics have links to all three of the topics.

message 66: by Tammy K. (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Thank you Randy!
It looks awesome, I don't know why I was trying to make it all one group, it will work the way you set it up perfectly.
You Rock!

message 67: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments All right, let's bring on some Desolation!

November 1 is just around the corner, and we should have enough of a sugar-high from the Halloween candy that the commentary can be a hybrid of Rodney Dangerfield and John Candy.

message 68: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Not Robin Williams and Jim Carey?

message 69: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments Could, but I figure the dead comics would be better for this undead group.

Plus, we all know Tammy 'gets no respect,' and Randy says he's big as an ogre, so yeah...maybe Dangerfield and John Candy would work better! LOL ;-)

message 71: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments LOL. Good point. Actually, Don Rickles probably fits our repartee best. But he only LOOKS like the undead. Milton Berle was good too.

I loved those old Dean Martin Celebrity roasts. I watch a few on YouTube every once in a while.

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Hey guys...just went on Amazon to buy this and found out that it's free for Amazon Prime members!!! YAY!!! I didn't have to spend any dough :-) Just thought I'd let you all know, just in case there are any other Prime members wanting to read. I can't wait!!! I'm gonna post it on the first thread for Desolation, too, just to spread the word...

message 74: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments OK. For the Desolation buddy read, I've set up the discussion topics on the book's web page (see links at bottom).

The buddy read of the book has been broken up into three parts:

Part one: Infernal (chapters 1-9, 58 pages).
Part two: Necrosis (chapters 10-19, 92 pages).
Part three: The Hiving of Refuge (chapters 20-31, 70 pages).

The reading schedule:

Part one: Read November 1st, discuss starting on November 2nd.
Part two: Read November 3rd, discuss starting on November 4th.
Part three: Read November 5th discuss starting on November 6th.

Links to discussion topics:

Through part one
Through part two
Through part three

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) I am game anyway you want to try this.

I will bookmark the link so that I can get to the discussion easier.

It is good to try new things, if it doesn't work we will find out eh? :-)

So what we need now is to have our great and awesome Moderator Elizabeth to delete all the links for the BOTM that remain in the Zombies! group pages save the ones in the buddy request link, right?

If this works Randy, when we do the buddy read for the third book of The Starborn Saga series by Jason D. Morrow, we can do it on the book's goodreads page.
I say that because I think that of the Zombies! group, only you and I have read the first two books (I am actually still reading book two, I am currently at 28% but should be done before the weeks is out0>

However, I want to keep in mind that buddy reads are as much to promote the group (Zombies!) as they are about sharing the reading experience.

I, like each and every one of you in this upcoming buddy read, have put a LOT of time and effort into reviving the Zombies! group.
I also want to take a moment to thank each of you.
Thank you, Randy
Thank you, Netanella
Thank you, Teresa
Thank you, Elizabeth
and Thank you to all the other regular members and Jim our other moderator.
I deeply appriecate all the time and hard work you put into the spirit of the Zombies! group.
You are all awesomely fabulous.

...is free on Amazon today. It has very good ratings. Anyone interested in a Buddy Read of it after Desolation?

I love the start of the blurb for this one:

"The world ended on a Thursday."

message 78: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Yeah, I'm game! This month is gonna be way more packed with group reads, buddy reads, and my 'alone' reads, but I LOVE it!!! So, yeah, I just 'bought' it and I'm ready when you guys say go!

I'm thinking the same thing about the tangled thread, but I'm going to go back through and delete irrelevant ones of mine later. If we all did that, it should clear out the 'trash' and it would leave less work for our already super-busy moderators!

I grabbed it Randy.
But.... I have this buddy read followed by a R4R that is also over 400 pages.
So it depends on when you start.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Ok Everyone who is participating in the Desolation buddy read, If you haven't already start reading assignment 1.
Tomorrow or when you are ready there after go to the books goodreads page by clicking the link which Randy posting in message #74 to post your comments.

I have not started the reading of this book yet. I plan on sticking on the schedule which we agreed to. However if you get done early and feel a desire to say something about that reading section, feel free to post away. We will catch up with each other, as each of us progress.

I am excited to try this three-link discussion. It will be interesting to see how well my memory works between threads ;-)

See you on the discussion page.

message 85: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) I get to cheat, Tammy! I can post at 12:01 my time, and it'll only be 9:01 your time! :-P LOL...just kidding!!! I don't think anything will be SO important that it can't wait til tomorrow morning! I'm excited to see how the discussion goes, as this is the first 'buddy read' I'm taking part in. I'm excited!

message 86: by Randy (new)

Randy Harmelink | 2188 comments Actually, I think people can post to the topics any time, since they are spoiler topics. Just don't read the part 1 messages until you're done with part 1.

No worries about running into stuff from part 2 being early, because those go in the other topic.

Yes Lana, anyone can join in.
If you are not already familiar with Buddy Reads, it may help to read the 'guidelines' for Buddy Reads (the first thread of this topic) to get a feel for how buddy reads work.
This is the first time that I have tried a buddy read on the books page itself instead of inside the group threads, so it will be interesting to see if we get any other non-Zombies! group members joining us.

message 89: by Lana (new)

Lana (pushindazees) Thanks Tammy :-)

message 90: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) For all you guys interested in 100 Days In Deadland: I have a request to take maybe, say, a week break between Desolation & that one. It has 9 sections, and us at least twice as long as Desolation. I was thinking maybe keeping the same set-up (i.e., one day per section reading, one day per section discussing). I think 100 Days In Deadland may be a little more 'literary,' being a mock-up of Dante's Inferno. We'll see, I suppose. But I plan on participating in both BOTM this month as well, plus a buddy read with Netanella (Anno Dracula- we still on for that one, chick?), so I'm gonna be busy. Anyway...if we started 100 Days on maybe the Wednesday the 12th, that would give me some time to finish a few books I'm ploughing through alone.... Just lemme know what you all think I know 18 days seems like a LONG time for a buddy read, so maybe we could do 2 sections each day with one day for discussion? I don't know- just throwing some suggestions out there! Hope you guys are still interested! I'm having fun so far with Desolation!

message 91: by Tammy K. (last edited Nov 01, 2013 10:54PM) (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) I can't speak for the others but a week or so between the two would be good for me.
As I said I've got a 400+ page R4R to do next and one of my favorite indie authors just sent me a free copy of the second book in her zombies series:-) thank you D.R. Johnson I am totally psyched about reading part two of After The Phoenix Curse !!!
I might be two timing this buddy read to slip in a couple hours with it. ;-)

message 92: by Teresa (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments Or Asher ;)

I have no "book commitments" other than Desolation currently, so 100 Days in Deadland and Anno Dracula are ready to go at any time, as far as I'm concerned.

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Netanella wrote: "Or Asher ;)

Depending on how the BOTMs go this month (NOT good, I'm guessing), I may wanna wait til December to start Anno Dracula. But who knows? I'm SOOOO irate right now over this 'vote stacking' I may end up getting banned from the group due to my incessant rants. We'll do Desolation, then 100 Days in Deadland, plus you and me on the Undead L.A. BOTM. I'm giving up on Savage Dead if no one else is participating, so that would open the end of November. We'll figure it out, though. I'm sure of that, at least!

message 96: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments I haven't bought Savage Dead yet, but I do want to read some McKinnley. I'll wait till the last minute to see if there's any interest.

I'm totally about the free book zombie thread that Randy, Sara, and a few others keep up. Maybe our group read could be based around some of the great freebies that are out there already?

message 97: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) That WOULD be cool...and at least when those books go 'off sale' they are still only a buck or two, rather that 9 or 10 bucks...

message 98: by Lana (new)

Lana (pushindazees) I have both Undead LA and Savage Dead and am hoping we have a BOTM on both of them. Maybe if the BOTM doesn't happen we can do buddy reads on them?

message 99: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) Lana: Jump in, lady!!!! They ARE the BOTMs this month!!! Undead L.A. is first...we are reading chapters 1 & 2 by the 6th of November. Go to the groups page and find the group reads or Book Of The Month threads and there are already 2...one for Undead L.A. and one for Savage Dead. Would you maybe be interested in moderating Undead L.A.? We need a mod pretty bad or else its just gonna be a free for all. Its not that bad; all you gotta do is ask a few questions on the 6th for the first chunk, and so on. I would LOVE it if you'd do it!!! If not, we will still need to try and find a mod, or else just shoot ideas and discussion points off each other...

message 100: by Lana (new)
