I am always upset at the way I see people treat sharks, as if they were mindless killers that deserve to be destroyed. Such irony in that.

Julia (juliastrimer) I agree, Jimmy--the National Geographic site says: "Sharks have prowled Earth's seas, essentially unchanged, for 400 million years. Their size, power, and great, toothy jaws fill us with fear and fascination. And though sharks kill only a few people each year, media coverage and movie portrayals of attacks have marked sharks as voracious killing machines. Our fears—and appetites—fuel an industry that hunts more than 100 million sharks each year and threatens to purge these vital predators from the oceans."

I remember after Jaws the movie people went crazy killing sharks. There were stories in the news of sharks pulled in and then people would start clubbing them in a frenzy. To Peter Benchley's credit, he felt very bad about what his book and movie caused and dedicated his life to helping sharks. Now his widow continues the cause.
