I thought the little animal's death was kind of meaningless and unneeded. I thought the little animal was sort of unneeded and I dislike it when bad things happen to animals. It's an easy way to pull on the heart strings but it's cheap and underhanded.

It's a great book, but this one thing stuck out.

KristenR (klrenn) | 124 comments I see what you're saying....but I was thinking that it wasn't necessarily meaningless. The animal was the only thing that he lost, the only bad thing that happened as a result of calling the spirit, that wasn't tied up with some negative aspect of his character (the pride, jealousy, and ambition that colored his relationships with others.) It affected a completely innocent creature. It seemed to me to be the only thing Ged looked back on with pure sorrow.

I don't know...I wouldn't have liked the book any less if that little animal wasn't in there at all, but I don't think I would change it.

I have a thought about this. What if the witch, or whoever pulled Ged through the doorway, tossed out the otak? This is me wondering here; the book says nothing either way. But what if the otak, because it knew its own name, could have helped Ged to stay free of the spell that almost got him? Names are important in the book. Just wondering.

Veronika KaoruSaionji | 109 comments I love otak and I was very sad because its death. It would be better if it survive! But, I mean that LeGuin wants there some more pain for Ged (it is in my opinion very "leGuinish"). I understand it.
But, I would change it, too. I love otak too much! :o)
Than, I would like in this book more about his clasmate "enemy" - I like him!
