Welcome Kelsey, I loved Fried Green Tomatoes (both book and film) when read / watched a few years ago.

Andy Capricorn | 0 comments The only one I haven't read on your list is Ocean at the End of the Lane! I have loved all of the others! What do you think of them?

Simon Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen was a wonderful book. Have you seen the movie yet?

Kelsey | 2 comments Hi all,

I really enjoyed The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It was my first book by Gaiman. It was like taking a peak into someone's imagination. I read the book as though the little boy was using his fantasies to get him through a difficult time in his life (infidelity, death, abuse, etc).

I LOVED Water for Elephants! The movie was good, but the book was amazing!! The author made the nursing-home Jacob such a robust and 3-d character. I also appreciated that though we saw the animal abuse happening around the Circus, it wasn’t overly graphic.

I’m still reading Fried Green Tomatoes. This book is taking me longer than I had anticipated. I’ve seen the movie and loved it. The book is very, well … everywhere. Even with the dates on the top of each chapter, I’m still having a hard time grasping the timeline. I'm also having a hard time understanding how a Southern community, that is described as incredibly racist & bigoted, has no qualms about a lesbian couple. In fact, their relationship is never even discussed, it’s just matter-of-factly stated … it doesn’t seem realistic to me.

I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I think it's a honest story about relationships and communication. Although I’ve always “known” about footbinding, until I read this book, I’ve never taken a real interest into it. While reading this story, I googled images of footbinding … absolutely atrocious!!

Ella Enchanted was a cute, feminist, fairy tale.

I’m looking forward to reading more with this group! I’m already so impressed by how welcome you all have made me feel!
