Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments 15.1 -- Bookends
Read a book that is the first book in a series. There may be any number of books planned for the series, but the book you read must be identified as part of a series on Goodreads and be marked as book #1.

AND

Read a book that is the last book in a series that contains at least 3 books. This may be either the final book in the series or the most recently published book in the series. The book must be identified as part of a series on Goodreads. Short stories, novella, or other works within a series labeled #X.5 should be ignored.

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments If the next book in the series will be published during the Fall challenge, that one would be considered the most recent.

Great!

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments What is the cutoff date for "most recent"? I've got a book on my shelf that's currently the most recent in the series, but the next one in the series will be published 11/7/13 if Goodreads has the date right, so I'm not sure if this would be OK to use.

message 8: by Claire (new)

Claire (proud-mum) | 1086 comments I am going to read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (#1 in series) and Inferno by Dan Brown (#4 and most current in series).

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments Kristi - I has a question - so i'm working on the Jefferson Bass series - the last book in the series is #7 (The Inquisitor's Key) - however, they have a new book coming out in the series, that is gonig to be a prequel...do I go with the book 7? (i'm going to assume yes, but wanted to check)

Even though it's a prequel, it's listed on GRs as book #8. Since we're going by GRs numbering system, the last book in the series would be considered to be #8 (since it's slated to be published during the fall season).

message 14: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments gotcha...but if it gets fixed to be the prequel - which was on my list of things to do for the series...then #7 would work?

The book you've linked to is listed as (Nightshade Legacy #1). It would work for book 1, but not book 2.

Alexis (kheleyr) | 120 comments Would Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Last Gleaming (Season 8, #8) for book #2 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Freefall (Season 9, #1) for book #1 work?

I think Season 8 and Season 9 are considered two different series.

message 32: by Andy (new)

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments I want to read Mrs. Malory Investigates (which is also called Gone Away in a recent reprint),It is the first in the Mrs. Malory Series. The last book listed by GR in this series is Mrs. Malory and Any Man's Death but I have a copy of Mrs. Malory and a Necessary End which is obviously published after Any Man's Death, so it seems that Necessary End is the most recent and, hence the bookend, no?

As a GR Librarian I checked various sources online e.g. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/h/h... and all agreed that A Necessary End is book 20 (i.e. currently the last) in the series so I have added it to the series on Goodreads. You should be fine now.

Yes, they're treated as two different series on Goodreads so that works.

Thanks for investigating that and getting the data straightened out, Rosemary! I agree, Mrs. Malory and a Necessary End appears to be the last book in the series (for now at least).

Angela | 919 comments LOL Kristi! Actually I took it out of the library before the challenge started and thought it was over the 500 pages, but that was the paperback copy. I renewed it twice and felt bad renewing it a third time, so I just went ahead and plunged in! Thanks for the approval for this :)!

It shows up as (The Fitzwaren Novels #1) on it's main page so, yes, it'll work as the first book in a series.

As long as it's approved for length (unconditional, 100+ pages), it'll work.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 119 comments I just finished The Rainbow, which GR lists as Brangwen Family #1, with Women in Love being Brangwen Family #2. Since the author, D.H. Lawrence, passed away in 1930, there will be no more books in that series. Is it still okay to use this as my 1st book of a series for this challenge, or must the series have 3 books?

The only requirement for book A is that it be marked as (series title, #1) on Goodreads so The Rainbow works.

The second book of the task is the one that must be the last book in a series that contains 3 or more books.
