message 1: by Chloe (new)

Chloe Louise | 1 comments Hello so I just finished the classic book 'of mice and men' by John Steinbeck, and I loved it.
Was I the only one who thought it was amazingly well written?
Does anyone else have any recommendations for more classics?
Thanks
Louis x

Ethan (platypopper) | 3658 comments Um... I'm reading the Picture of Dorian Gray. It's amazing. You should read it.

Also, Lord of the Flies, Treasure Island and Animal Farm are all very good.

Oliver (oliverthereader) | 117 comments 'Of Mice and Men' was a really good book.
Earlier this year I read 'A Tale of Two Cities' by Charles Dickens and I thought it was amazing.

A Tale of Two Cities was fantastic!

And as for other books I really liked Jane Eyre

Elevetha | 11058 comments I have A Tale of Two Cities in English this year. Animal Farm too.

Hmm. Pride and Prejudice, for sure. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The Scarlet Pimpernel

message 7: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) Oh, a lot of people don't like The Scarlet Letter but I thought it was really pretty good after you get used to his writing.

Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall (taelianaofthewind) | 1580 comments Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre(especially Jane Eyre) Anne of Green Gables, The Grapes of Wrath was pretty good.
I'm reading Dickens right now and Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities, in my opinion, are convoluted but worthwhile.
(Edit) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes!

In the past two weeks I've been on a classic binge never seen by the likes of me so hope that helps :)

I'm not into classics that much, but I loved To Kill a Mockingbird!! Awesome book!!

message 11: by Elysia (new)

Elysia (elysia_rae) The Great Gatsby, one of my favourite books! And The Hobbit is another great one as well, if you're into adventure. :)

message 12: by Bee (new)

Bee (chemistbee) | 11 comments Don't know if it's a classic but was written in the 19th century (i think!) but I love The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. I don't really like the main character but the storyline is really good and I love Robin (guy).

message 13: by James (new)

James Loftus I don't know if it is in fact a classic, Dune but for my money the best Sci Fi young adult book ever.

message 14: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Stacy | 4 comments Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Secret Garden, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the Sherlock Holmes books, Emma, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Outsiders. Just to name a few :)

message 15: by Tatiana (last edited Feb 11, 2014 02:50PM) (new)

Tatiana (gringachronicles) I really liked Of Mice and Men too! One of my all time favorite classic book is The Catcher in the Rye.
I know that this isn't a book but "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov is a really amazing short story.

message 16: by Marleny (new)

Marleny (marlenyr) | 14 comments This year I read for the first time: Catcher in the Rye, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden and also Pride and Prejudice. My two all-time faves are Jane Eyre and To Kill A Mockingbird. Also really great are Madame Bovary and The Scarlet Letter.

message 17: by Tea (new)

Tea (tea24601) | 14 comments Anything by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is my personal favorite. Austen manages to portray characters and their relationships very realistically and you can't help but to fall in love with them.

message 18: by Binari (new)

Binari I loved The Moon is Down, which is also by John Steinbeck

James Loftus Ethan wrote: "Um... I'm reading the Picture of Dorian Gray. It's amazing. You should read it.

Animal Farm & 1984, very very brilliant.

message 21: by James (new)

James Loftus So many great classics perhaps the most totally spell binding and written with extreme genius, Tolstoy's War and Peace

message 22: by Emma (new)

Emma (_nerd_always_) | 1 comments To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë are both amazing books

message 23: by James (new)

James Loftus Yes, they are too.

message 24: by Adam (new)

Adam Dune is NOT a young adult novel. Albeit it is still quite a good book.

I didn't enjoy Steinbech's stories at all. I first encountered him when I was made to read "The Pearl" and I found that story terrible. I just could never get into him.

However, I did like "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexander Dumas. I also quite enjoyed some original sci-fi stuff like "Time Machine" by HG Wells. I agree with the recommendation of Sherlock Holmes, one of my all time favorites and I just don't think you can go wrong with that.

message 25: by Felicia (last edited Mar 30, 2014 06:11AM) (new)

Felicia LOTR!!!!!!!!!!!! I also really enjoyed Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird and Animal Farm. Apologies to Austen fans, but Pride and Prejudice bored me to death.

message 26: by James (new)

James Loftus I found the Count of Monte Cristo dull and juvenile.

Why isn't Dune young adult? The heroes journey told as well as anywhere in literature.

Animal Farm, Brave New World - truly, works of genius.

message 27: by Adam (new)

Adam Because Frank Herbert wasn't writing it for kids. Neither were a lot of other classic authors.

I don't even think young-adult existed as a genre back then. It's a very new thing.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 270 comments I just finished Jane Eyre and it was AMAZING!! I recommend it, but also read it keeping the time period in mind. I know someone who thought (view spoiler). I'm just saying that it's amazing.
I also love Little Women, Little Men and Jo's Boys though you need to read them all and in order. I greatly enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm not sure if LOTR and Narnia count as classics, or modern classics or what they are exactly but they are amazing. I liked the one Anne of Green Gables movies better then the book, but I still like the book too.
I liked Animal Farm, though I can see how it might not be for everyone. I'd at least suggest giving it a chance.
Personally I do not like or recommend Pride and Prejudice. It lacked all the wonderful beauty of Jane Eyre, and I was only able to take away a dislike of the characters from the whole thing.

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

message 34: by Abigail (new)

Abigail R (abigailred) | 10 comments I really loved Fahrenheit 451 and Watership Down. I'm also reading Tales of a Wayside Inn currently. It isn't really a classic, but it's from the 19th century, and it doesn't have much of a plot so far. It's entirely in verse and a group of friends are telling each other stories. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like poetry though.

message 35: by Izzy (new)
