Colleen | 353 comments I would be interested in The Sparrow - I have owned a copy forever so would be great to get to it!

Joan Cane or The Sparrow sound interesting to me.

Nichole | 554 comments Cane or The Sparrow, also. You probably will need to remind me. I will forget.

Joan - if you are still interested in these, I'm up for reading On Liberty sometime next year. It's shorter than the other books on that list and probably more enjoyable to read than most of them. (I've read it before.)

edit: also, does anyone want to join me for The Aeneid in April or May?

Me too.
I read it in Latin at school so I am not sure if I have an English copy. Is there a recommended translation?

I don't know which translation is considered best. My copy is translated by Allen Mandlebaum and I don't recall any difficulties with it but as I said before, it has been years since I read it. Apparently this translation won an award back in 1973 but I am sure that there are newer translations available.

I'd like to read On Liberty by John Stuart Mill as well.

Great Colleen and Joan! I'll set up a thread for starting early January. :)

message 866: by Beth (new)

Beth | 410 comments Joan - let's plan on April - that way we can read it after the group read of City of God that I'm doing in another group (January-March).

Leslie - I have the Robert Fitzgerald Aeneid, which is one of the contemporary translations. Another contemporary translation is by Robert Fagles. So I expect to start it in April, but I might continue into May depending on how fast I read it.

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments Beth wrote: "Another contemporary translation is by Robert Fagles. ."

Robert Fagles name sounds familiar so his translation must have been recommended to me previously. Please count me in whenever you decide to start.

Pam (bluegrasspam) Greg, Joan, Colleen- I am interested in reading The Sparrow also as a buddy read. I'm ready to start it on Jan 1. It looks so good that I added it to my 2018 12+4 Sci-Fi challenge.

I read Fagles' translation of Homer's The Odyssey a few years back and it was very good (though I still think fondly of the Robert Fitzgerald translation we used in high school).

I'm tempted to join too Beth! I don't know much about Virgil yet. Does anyone know if Virgil's style is more straightforward/majestic like Sophocles or more dense/poetic like Aeschylus? Forgive my horrible simplifying, but you probably get the idea. I'm waffling between translations, and the style of the original might help me pick which translation to try.

I would say it is more like Homer than either Sophocles or Aeschylus.

I'm completely booked in January and perhaps February, but would anyone be interested in a buddy read of Inferno (Dante Alighieri), maybe in March?

A mix of translations would be fine - comparing translations is interesting in itself - but I want to re-read the translation by American poet Robert Pinsky (The Inferno of Dante: A New Verse Translation by Robert Pinsky) that won the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award of the Academy of American Poets. There are plenty of other excellent translations available though to choose from!

Pink Yes I'm interested in reading Inferno in March or later. I have a copy on my shelf, but I'm not sure who it's translated by.

message 883: by Manuel (new)

Manuel I'm planning on rereading A Discovery of Witches, but I haven't decided if I want to read it in one go or do a few chapters each day as it's quite a long book.

It'd be great if someone wants to join me.

Antonio Gallo (galloway) | 2327 comments We don't read for an audience. We read for ourselves. The audience I experience that I imagine, that I imitate, that I adopt, that I internalize, that I have is, at its most intense, and perhaps at its most most basic default-level, one of a solitary pleasure. Sharing comes after. We all read in a different manner. We never read in the same way the same book ...

I also like sharing the comments, but not during the reading journey. Just like when you watch a movie, you are not supposed to speak, to interact or ask anything around ...

I might be interested. I am currently doing the Odyssey with two other groups, so it depends on how quickly you want to move through the Aeneid. If it is at a moderate pace, I'll probably be able to join. I'll wait to see what you decide before I commit as I don't want to commit if I don't think I'll be able to participate.

message 898: by Pink (new)

Pink I'm probably going to bail on The Aeneid readalong. I have too many other books on the go or planned for May, so I doubt I'll have time.

A moderate pace sounds good to me, since I'm reading it for the first time. I'd like to start in the 1st or maybe the 2nd week of May, depending on when I have time, and then I think it will take about a month, maybe a little longer with the other stuff I have going on.
