Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Dhanaraj - would it be a good idea to ask Leslie to add The Sea, the Sea
here? That's the thread I go to to remind me of upcoming readalongs...

message 303: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments I think Laura had done it already. If not, please do inform Leslie. And that is right way to remind ourselves. Thanks.

Chrissie There were several of us interested in reading The Secret History of Costaguana if it was not chosen as the fiction book group read. Am I posting this in the correct place? Who would like to read this and when?

Gill | 5719 comments Chrissie wrote: "There were several of us interested in reading The Secret History of Costaguana if it was not chosen as the fiction book group read. Am I posting this in the correct place? Who woul..."

Yes, Chrissie, correct place. I'd like to read this, but not till October, so if others want September, I'll catch up with you all later.

message 328: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Gill, let's see when the others want to read it. I am fine with waiting, as long as I know we will be reading it. I am very much looking forward to this one.

Glad I found the right place!

message 329: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Gill, I went ahead and bought The Red and the Black, so I will be reading it soon. You can see what I think of it and I can see what you think of The Charterhouse of Parma. I wonder which one is best, but I found R&B a bit more to my taste. I am scared that if I start with one I don't like I will go no further with the author.

I've abandoned C of P,Chrissie. I was bored silly by it

message 331: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Gill, that doesn't sound good. My next book planned is The R&B...... Now I am even more scared that it will be a failure.

Greg | 8316 comments Mod
Chrissie, you might find some of the characters off-putting (unpleasant), but I don't think you'll find The Red and the Black boring.

message 333: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Greg, yup, I have heard the characters are not necessarily nice but that the book is good. i will start it today. Just finished this morning my previous book. Thank you, Greg. Did you read The R&B long ago or recently? Have you read other books by Stendhal, and if you have how do they compare?

message 334: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Jenny, please set up a thread for the reading of The Secret History of Costaguana starting October 1st. Gill, Paula, Diane and I want to read this in October. If I have done something wrong please tell me.

Anyone else interested is of course welcome. Please let us know if you too are interested in joining us.

I read The Red and the Black less than a year ago, but I haven't read anything else by Stendhal; so I don't know how it compares to his other works.

Chrissie Greg wrote: "I read The Red and the Black less than a year ago, but I haven't read anything else by Stendhal; so I don't know how it compares to his other works."

Thanks, Greg!

I have zero trouble with the beginning. Interesting right from the start. It is about a saw-miller's son who wants to make something of himself. He has been employed as a tutor for the mayor's three kids. The boy's father does not like that his son loves books and so was glad to get him out of the sawmill and would earn money from the mayor too. It is set in a small village near Besançon, France.

Gill, this one by Stendahl captures your interest immediately, but I have no idea how it will hold up.

message 337: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've set it up for you Chrissie, it is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Gill, I've tried the Charterhouse once and abandoned it, interestingly the same happened to me the first time I attempted to read The Red and the Black, I just absolutely couldn't get into it, yet 3 years later I listened to it and loved it. Very odd that. It seems I need 2 attempts with Mr. Stendhal always.

message 338: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thank you Jenny.

Re: The Red and the Black. Not sure what I think. Some of the characters are really extremely naive, others extremely self-centered and egotistical. Will continue.

message 339: by Noel (new)

Noel (noel-brady) I realize this is a book most people have read already, but if anyone else missed it (like me!), I'm going to be reading Animal Farm in September in honor of Banned Books Week. Very short and would probably provide some good opportunity for discussion. Anyone want to join me?

message 340: by Greg (new)

Greg | 8316 comments Mod
I'd be happy to read it again Shannon, but I couldn't do it until mid-September because of other readalongs. :)

That's fine! We can save it for actual Banned Books Week, which is Sept 21-27, if that works.

Anyone else?

message 342: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments I wouldn't mind joining in on Animal Farm. May start a bit earlier than 21st September though.

I've never done a readalong before - shall I start a thread now, or wait til Sept 21?
