Clean Reads discussion

i was wondering if anyone knew of any clean thriller novels? like not much swearing, no sex scenes or explicit or over the top violence? also nothing to do with spiritism or supernatural plz. any recommendations would b fab :-)

Do you like Mary Higgins Clark? Shes clean and little to no cussing. Also no paranormal.

No? Shes very good! Also if you like historical /Gothic thrillers try Victoria Holt (and her other pen names Phillips Carr and Jean Plaidy) I love a good Holt book but I'm a sucker for historical anything :)

Anya Seton and Daphne du Maurier are two more great historical mystery writers.

My sister and I have a thriller coming out in October called Deathblow. It is comparable to Mary Higgins Clark as far as the levels of sex and violence are concerned--no sex,violence is not over the top. Most of our books are like that-they are murder mysteries so you're going to have some blood, but not guts hanging out and all that sickening stuff. I'll post again when it is available. If you check our list you'll see that we also have gothics, romantic suspense and many other titles. For readers who like a modern-day book with a gothic type style and historic painted lady houses, we'e gotten good feedback from The Vanished Lady.

I need to check out your books! Which ones would you recommend for a first time reader of your work who likes historical suspense? (that's me :)

Have you ever read Rebecca" by Daphne DuMaurier? I really enjoyed that one. It's not a thriller but does have a taste of mystery.

Also, "My Cousin Rachel" by Daphne DuMaurier was really suspenseful.

I also like Dan Brown. I'm currently ready his new book called "Inferno". It's not as good as "DaVinci Code" or "Angels and Demons". None of them contain swearing, descriptive violence or sex, and no paranormal either, but they are mysteries and keep your interest.

Oh! and I just read "Death in Kenya" by M.M. Kaye and that was phenomenal! She has a whole "death in.." series which focus on mysteries in different places like Andamas, Berlin, Cyprus etc.. Theyre oldies but goodies!

Yes, that's what I especially appreciate about Dan Brown's books.He writes 'edge of your seat'thrillers,that are so gripping and interesting and he has proven it can easily be done without the vulgar profanity,explicit sex, or violent gore that lesser authors resort to.

I was also fascinated by the historical info in both Angels and Demons and the DaVinci Code. Now I can't wait to read 'Deception Point' and 'Inferno'.

Lis Wiehl is a great suspense/thriller author. Very clean.

Question...'what IS "spiritism"?

Spiritism is the belief or doctrine that the spirits of the human dead can and do communicate with the living, especially through a person (a medium). Communication with spirits, human or demonic, is a belief that religion has promoted since the early Egyptians and Babylonians.

I liked Angels and Demons and DaVinci Code, but I have to disagree about violence. Angels and Demons was one of the most graphically violent books I've ever read. It turned my stomach on more than one occasion, but was so compelling that I kept reading. I just wouldn't want someone to read it and be blind sided by the content.

Oh like seances and those who believe a departed's ghost has spoken to them,thank you for explaining that,as I had never heard or read that term before.

Sorry, Erin....I stand corrected. You're right about Angels and Demons. I forgot the violence was pretty gross. I did enjoy the book in spite of that....I don't usually like the violence and don't know how I could have forgotten about how gory it was :(

Spiritism can be anything involving contact with the dead or with demonic spirit creatures. It's a good thing to stay away from as far as I'm concerned.

Sandy,yeah,I have only run across books with demons when I read 'Christian' spiritual warfare type books such as by Frank Peretti.

Have to confess though that I like a good ghost story like those by Mary Downing Hahn,which are YA.

Oh and I also agree that Angels And Demons had some pretty strong violence, yet I still thought it was an excellent read!

thanks for explaining spiritism. i like to stay away from anything even remotely supernatural because my concious wont let me near them (im a jehovahs witness). Thanks for the suggestions everyone. im currently reading clive cussler but as soon as im finished im getting a load of new books :-(

I really enjoy Mary Higgins Clark. She has been one of my role models. She's managed to keep her books fairly clean and they are still exciting to read.

Our thriller, Death Blow is out now. If you can handle Mary Higgins Clark, ours book is even a bit cleaner than that. We don't rely on gore and sex scenes, but romance and suspense to keep the plot going. If you like thrillers or women in jeopardy novels, I hope you will consider giving this book a try.

Alistair MacLean, definitely. He's written about 32 novels, of which I've read more than 25. No sex scenes AT ALL, no cussing AT ALL. Very very clean read. Not sure they will qualify as "thriller", though. More like adventure? They're very exciting anyway.

I've just downloaded Land by Theresa Shaver, but can someone please tell me why it has gigantic gaps in between the paragraphs?
