If you could write a book where you could change one event in history, what would it be?

Would it be something personal to you? Or would you kill hitler? Thinking of the consequences, would it be worth it?

I want to know :3

I think it would be interesting to write an alternative history where either the USA wins or loses the War of 1812, the real war ended in a stalemate but if it had gone one way or the other things would have been really different. I think that would be fun to explore. I have a story on the back burner that is set during that war and it would be an interesting direction to take it.

I really love that time period and I'm a big history geek about that war. It was so important to national identity for the USA and Canada which is fascinating to me.

I never really learned about it before I took a class with my american friend, she really got me into that time period. Not to mention the whole culture of her area... Frankly, I don't give a damn.

She is a writer too so I learn alot from her :3

before I mostly knew about european and eastern histories, but there are even more nice things to learn stateside too :3

Probably because the War of 1812 is kind of overshadowed by the Napoleonic War from a European perspective.

I read an article the other day that talked about certain turning points in history where if things had gone the other way things would be really different. I think it's fun to speculate.

History is so full of great stories everywhere in the world. :)

Kay, if the Brits had won the Battle of Lake Erie ( 200th anniversary today!) I might be living in Canada. Currently live near Toledo, Ohio. Hmm...

I often wonder what would have happened if christianisation had not hit scandiavia (is studying it right now) :p

@Carl - Assuming the war did not still end in a stalemate. Geography would have been interesting in the northeast if both sides kept the land they won. There are certainly a lot of directions to go with an alternative history of that war. It's fun to think about.

Bisky, I wonder about the Norse as well. Most of those practices were lost once Xtianity took hold. American Indians list much but have been able to reclaim some sacred storIes and practices. 1000 years is a lot to make up.
