Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments Has anyone read this yet? It's only $5.99 for Kindle and I'm thinking about it, but no one I know has read it yet so don't know if it's any good or not!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments Melodie: I am enjoying The Cuckoo's Calling! I borrowed on library loan Kindle and am at 24% - I like it so far! I have no idea where it is going to end up but so far it is a private eye type detective story with interesting characters and an interesting case. A few of the UK references have gone over my head. I seem to recall that they "Americanized" the Harry Potter books with versions for US release, that hasn't happened here.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I just picked this one up from the library yesterday and I've read 75 pages. I agree with Ann...I'm really enjoying it! I think the UK references are kind of confusing and find myself reading a sentence more than once, but it doesn't detract from the story :)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Just caved and bought it for my Kindle (Thanks Melodie)...gotta finish the 3 I am reading now, but maybe by the end of the week. Ann, I look forward to your review!

Ann, I know what you mean! I am a member of the English Mysteries Group here on G/R and have toyed with the idea of starting a topic there listing all the perplexing British-isms I run across when I'm reading that genre that I'm sure folks there could clarify. Many I can figure out in context, like car-park for parking lot and bed-sit for efficiency apartment, but there are some ("Bob's your uncle" -- what?!?!) that elude me. I'll let you know if I do.

Although, now you're making me think, I could probably do just as well with Google. But that wouldn't be half as much fun!

Mel, I had this on the request list from the library until my dentist loaned me his copy. Haven't started it yet. $5.99 is a great price, though, if I didn't already have a copy I'd think seriously about buying it for my Kindle.

You probably know the backstory -- that it was getting all kinds of raves over in the UK, and that was before anyone knew it was J.K. Rowling! So I'm guessing it's good....

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I went ahead and got it. I don't usually pay that much for e-books, but I paid the same for HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN, the new Penny book.

message 8: by Marcy (new)

Marcy | 865 comments I read it and really enjoyed it! I guessed the ending early on, but loved the characters and the writing. I had read Rowling's previous post-Harry Potter novel, The Casual Vacancy and hated it, so I didn't have a pre-conceived bias going in to this one. Hope this becomes a series.

message 9: by Seeley (new)

Seeley James (seeleyjames) My wife read it and said, mysters was meh but characterization was first class. She recommended it to me because she thinks my writing is the other way round :). I've put it on my TBR.

Peace, Seeley

Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments Marcy: Good to see you! So you hated The Casual Vacancy. I have heard mixed reviews. I have it lined up on audio for someday. The Cuckoo's Calling grabbed me up right away, faster than TCV.

message 11: by Marcy (new)

Marcy | 865 comments Thanks, Ann. I thought that The Casual Vacancy was depressing, with unlikeable characters and less than wonderful writing. I agree with Seeley's wife - okay mystery but excellent characters make The Cuckoo's Calling first rate!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16930 comments Good to know, Marcy - I'll be sure not to line up The Casual Vacancy when I need something more uplifting! :)
