Florence | 7 comments I think jk just shouldve focused on harry and ginny. I didnt buy their love. It happened too fast. Harry just went from Cho straight to Ginny. It was too fast. Harry shouldve loved ginny ever since he saved her from the chamber of secrets in the second book!

Rose (ka-tet-rose) | 55 comments I think that it was necessary. Cho was kind of Harry's introduction into the world of relationships and crushes. That's what it was, a crush. I liked how Harry and Ginny's relationship wasn't right away because it shows that both of them matured through the books. It wasn't expected or forced in my opinion.

Most savers don't fall in love as soon as they save the 'savee'. Its usually the opposite way around. And the story wasn't about Hinny, it was about Harry somehow overcoming an encounter with Voldemort of some kind.

Alexis | 108 comments I think she was need because as Ciarra said "she introduced harry to the world of relationships. Other than that she was pointless.

Brianna | 45 comments She was needed, but I never liked her.

Aiman | 3 comments I think that maybe she was slightly needed, but I don't like her.

dealwithapril I agree with Ciarra... Cho played a vital role in Harry's "relationship" life. She was the introduction to Harry's transition from being a boy to a man. It's the way JK tells the reader that Harry is no longer that boy in the cupboard. He's maturing... He's growing up and just like any other kid he begins to discover the opposite sex and see it in a different light. And also Harry shared a lot of his firsts with Cho. His first crush, kiss and girlfriend.

Kevin Randall (baddkar) | 10 comments I loved how JK had Harry experience his firsts with Cho. But I also love that fated or destiny type of love that he had with Ginny. She had a school girl type crush on him and then he shows up in her life as her brother's friend. That complicated her feelings because Harry wasn't looking at her like that yet nor any girl for that matter. But I think after their experience in the Chamber of Secrets they were soul mates of sorts. That kind of shared experience pushed them together. And again in OOTP they again were connected in a shared experience of both knowing what it was like being possessed by Voldy. Plus all the little things like being jealous of each other and what not.

Miranda | 186 comments I didn't really enjoy cho myself, I mean she wasn't that important...

message 10: by Ty (new)

Ty | 3 comments I personally like cho. But I agree with what other people on here say, she was needed to how the growth of Harry.

message 11: by Ella (new)

Ella Nisker Cho introduced harry to the world crushes and love. Otherwise she had no point in being alive.

message 12: by Reem (new)

Reem Dashti | 11 comments I think she was needed or like idk it was nice reading it lol but yeah i didnt like how he suddenly fell for Ginny... I'm not a huge Ginny fan lol but if he loves her then i'm happy for him LOL

message 13: by Ella (new)

Ella Nisker Cho introduce to growing up and not being the childish self in us all. She introduces Harry to the world of love he never noticed. yes, she was a good idea and way to make that happen and then she stirs up drama and isnt needed anymore.

message 14: by Erin Lynn (new)

Erin Lynn I liked having Cho as a character and love interest for Harry, and I do feel like she was needed for multiple reasons. Yes, she was Harry's first crush, and that really helped readers focus on the fact that Harry was growing up. I also like how she was included as a crush/girlfriend because most real people don't just marry the first person they have a thing for. It made the romance parts of the series a bit more realistic.

message 15: by Bex (new)

Bex | 24 comments Even though I was never a big fan of Cho, I felt like she was needed because it shows readers that Harry had a crush on other person throughout the series than just Ginny

Ember Suh | 8 comments I think that Cho Chang was unneeded. She wasn't good at helping the others very much.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I did. She was totaly an excess charcter that we could lived without.

message 19: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Farshaw | 120 comments Why does Harry fall for Cho? Because she's a hot girl who's into Quidditch

Why does Harry fall for Ginevra? Because... she's a hot girl who's into Quidditch.

See, there's no difference between them.

Anthony Farshaw | 120 comments Ria, Cho cried over Cedric's death. Do you seriously think Ginevra did not shed one tear over Fred's death?

But she spent the whole YEAR crying. Harry even comments that Ginny is ..."

How do you know? We barely see her in POA (or GOF for that matter), and one of the few moments we do see her, we see Hermione comfort her after the Dementor attack?

message 23: by Gayatri (new)

Gayatri Balasubramanian | 8 comments I agree with Ciarra that Cho was needed, because she was Harry's intro into the relationship world before he embarked on a serious one (Ginny). But really, Cho crying was quite logical. How would you feel if a guy you were dating, even if just for one month, turned up as a corpse and you don't even know why! You would have been so excited for him to win the competition, you had been crushing on him for a while and he finally asked you out, and you are so excited! And then he turns up dead. After that, Cho develops feelings for Harry, who she turned down for Cedric, and she would have felt that she is betraying him by dating his romantic and well as competitive rival. Throw that all in with teenage angst and you get Cho of Order Of The Phoenix.

Obviously she was going to be a mess. She is a teenage girl. Harry was pretty insensitive to this, but he is not to be blamed since he had a million problems of his own. But that's why when Cho asked about Cedric's death, probably for closure, he thought she was another busybody.

Also, friends, don't forget that the Point Of View is often skewed towards Harry. Even though the narrative was written in 3rd Person's, it was also written with Harry's biases. Example: Philosopher's Stone in first year where Harry was dead certain that Snape was the theif damnit. I'm pretty sure that if it was written from say, Hermione's viewpoint, we would have seen a completely different Cho since we no longer see her through Harry's eyes.

So yeah, I think in the end, Harry was a rebound for Cho. Harry had been connected to Cedric the entire of the 4th year and Cho was probably trying to cling on to him one way or another. Evidence suggests that Cho never really recovered from this, since she was still clinging to him in Deathly Hallows. It is very probable that she did not go to a PTSD counsellor. In the end, according to JK, Cho married a muggle guy, which I probably think is a manifestation of her desire to distance herself as much as possible from the wizarding world.

I'm really sorry for that long rambling post haha I got a bit carried away :)

l | 144 comments Think about it, how many people actually marry their first crush? To some people it may have been obvious that couples like ron/hermione and harry/ginny would eventually end up together, but they had to make their lives somewhat realistic.

You could also say characters like Lavender Brown and Viktor Krum were unecessarily romantically involved with the others in the trio. But we know that these characters are important for character development. They allow the main characters to explore relationships with new people and to experience their 'firsts'.

If J.K Rowling had just married everyone off with their first crush, it would seem kind of silly.

Lauren Kavanagh | 2 comments I don't think she was necessarily the most important character but I do think she was needed in some way, I think somebody has already mentioned it, but I think the little 'crush' signifies Harry's transition from boy to teen to man

message 27: by Macy (new)

Macy | 9 comments I think Cho Chang was needed for the simple fact of, when you are reading the first few books you think they will end up together, but then it changes things up when he starts paying more attention to Ginny. So with Cho in this book it just makes it a better story, with more twists and turns!

Brooklyn Tayla (bookishbrooklyn) | 833 comments While I confess to never being overly fond of Cho, she was needed. She mixed up the plot and distracted Harry from Ginny.
