Brooke | 44 comments For anyone who is going to NYC or lives close enough for a road trip, you must go to The Strand bookstore. It is a paradise for book lovers. The prices are amazing and the quanity of books is unbelievable! We got so many we had them shipped back home for us which also let us be tax exempt because we live out of state. My husband and I loved it so much we went a second time while in New York.

Petra X (petra-x) I would like to visit it. I used to buy a lot of books from them online but too often the books were out of stock for months (even though they were in stock when ordered) and they didn't send the freebies they advertised. So that put me off buying online from them, but I would still love to visit their bookshop.

Emily The Strand is one of the main places where I buy books (I live in NYC) and I also highly recommend it. You just have to go in there with an open mind and lots of patience as the aisles are very narrow and sometimes it is a bit messy.

Housing Works is another great used bookstore in the city that is in the same neighborhood as the Strand - all of the profits are donated to help research AIDS.

I love both these stores. And for those of you "in the neighborhood":
