Hey, gang!

It's time for August's Group Read suggestions!

Considering all the horrible things that have been seen in the waters this summer.....sharks, Portuguese man of wars, people wearing nothing but dental floss and body hair....I thought a good theme might be:

AQUATIC HORROR!

Oceans, lakes, streams, puddles....as long as it's wet and weird, it works for me!

Jeremy Hurd-McKenney (jtcontinental) It's a long one, but I've had The Swarm by Frank Schatzing on my "meaning to read someday" shelf for several years now, so I'm going to nominate it.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments Found this one as second in a list of top sea monster books: Meg by Steve Alten.

Brian Mcclain | 53 comments I'll nominate Dead Sea by Tim Curran

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll nominate:

White Shark by Peter Benchley

@ Marc-Antoine: Oh my, that cover looks creepy-crappy. Think I've read that book about 12, 13 years ago...

I'll second that - I keep hearing great things about it, and it's been on my list for quite a while.

Dead Sea by Tim Curran This was the book that first came to mind for me. I've had it on my TBR list for awhile now.

Heaven Bailey | 3 comments I'll nominate this collection of short stories, all of which have to do with water. It's called Dark Water by Koji Susuki.

on the main HA page, blood séance is listed as we are reading it but I couldn't find the thread anywhere. sorry for posting it here but I knew one of the mod's would see it. when I click view activity, it doesn't show any threads. we can delete this comment afterwards.

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Dead Sea is a good nomination. There's always The Deep The Deep by Nick Cutter .

message 15: by Simon (new)

Simon (simon-revels-in-reading) | 17 comments How about Night of the Crabs? Night of the Crabs by Guy N. Smith

message 17: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments A lot of these look good, I'm kinda rooting for a b-movie type...

Marc-Antoine, I was going to suggest a book (any book) by Steve Alten, and I see you listed Meg. Any of his books work for me :) .

Vostok looks good, but it's the sequel to The Loch.

I have no idea why that's there. It's not a group read.

VOSTOK links the Loch and Meg--I have it, but haven't read it yet. (Love Alten's work!)

11811 (Eleven) (11811) | 1561 comments Love the theme. Very creative. Everyone should read Curran's Dead Sea sooner or later. I consider it one of those HA must reads, up there with The Summer I Died and The Pilo Family Circus.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Dead Sea is a masterpiece. The only reason I didn't nominate it myself is because I finished it just 9 months ago.

message 24: by Janie (new)

Janie | 2874 comments The Dead Sea was like a fever dream. (That's a good thing!)

I've read DEAD SEA three times (the last time just last year, or it would have been by top choice).

It's on my to-be-reread list.

Melissa ♥ Dog/Wolf Lover ♥ Martin | 2262 comments Dead Sea by Tim Curran Just added it to my kindle unlimited list! I'm glad you all love it so much! I have never read it. Looking forward to it.

I have Dead Sea. This would give me a way to get it off my TBR list!

message 33: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Seems like Dead Sea is already the front-runner. I started reading it last summer, but stalled out. Maybe as part of a group I could actually finish it.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 958 comments I nominate Meg (Have to read but haven't read) or Dead Sea by Brian Keene - it's a zombie themed but it's mainly in the water and I want to do a re-read, it's a favorite of mine.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 958 comments I am okay with Curran's Dead Sea too - I haven't read that one or own it yet but see around here it's widely enjoyed.

Nickronomicon | 179 comments Dead Sea sounds good and looks like a strong contender....
How about Jaws Jaws by Peter Benchley or Kraken Kraken by China Miéville ?

message 38: by Dean (last edited Jul 13, 2015 04:33PM) (new)

Dean | 27 comments Jaws by Peter Benchley has been on my tbr pile for a while and it is the classic water/ocean horror story. I'll go with that.

It will remain open until the 27th.

message 42: by Alissa (new)

Alissa (alissamerritt) | 141 comments I've read Meg twice because I'm such a sicker for sharks and dinosaurs. I about 15% into Dead Sea, so that's my pick.

I second 'Meg.' It's on my 'to read' list, and they're turning it into a movie, so it might be a good time to pick it!
