Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I have a book with only 7232 0586 8 as the only identifying number and I can't find the exact edition (I don't think) of it in the GR database. Was there ever a 9 digit ISBN or some other identifying number anyone knows of? Thanks for any help, and I'll keep trying to figure it out too. The book is an edition of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, the Robert Browning poem, illustrated by Kate Greenaway (but not the ones by this duo I can find) and published by Frederick Warne and Co., Ltd. of London and New York, in hardcover, printed in Great Britain. There's no date for this edition. There's a note at the end of the book that says First published in 1888.

Thanks for any help.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I have a new American book that only has 9 digits in the ISBN. I decided it was a typo and added it without the ISBN. Maybe someone else knows more though.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments JG, Does it show as 9 digits inside the book? If so, it's probably not an error, but I'm surprised that there would be a 9 digit ISBN in a new book. I am assuming this book might have been published when ISBNs were new, or done differently in Great Britain perhaps.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments I looked all over and it was only printed in one place, with 9 digits. It's one of those cutesy Hallmark gift books, so I really didn't question it too much. I have at least one new kid's Christmas book from them that doesn't have an ISBN anywhere.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I see JG. Well, this is a "real" book and yet there's very little identifying publishing information. So, if anybody knows anything about this book or books such as this, I'd appreciate any advice. I'd rather not manually add any books to the database if it's already here, but I do want to add this book; I've already written a review and I want to return the book to the library asap.

Edit: Not that the cute Hallmark gift books aren't real, but this is a lavish edition of a full sized book.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Aldawen, No, I have not and that's a good suggestion. Going off to try that...

Edit: And it worked!!! Thank you Aldawen. The book does need some editing but it is here.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments I appreciate Aldawen and I'll try to remember that trick next time I come across this.

The book was in the database but it was hard to find because: 1. the title was spelled incorrectly, 2. the illustrator wasn't listed as an author and there are many, many editions of the book by the primary author, 3. the cover wasn't there, 4. the publisher was listed in an extremely abbreviated and unhelpful way, and I do believe I'm forgetting a couple of other omissions/errors.

So, chances are that if you had not given me that suggestion we'd have another not needed manually added book in the database. Thanks again.
