Premier Digital Publishing (PDigitalPub) | 4 comments I was wondering if there would be a forum soon that focuses on Colonial history?

Thanks

message 102: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
We do have an American History folder but I could set up a thread on Colonial History. I will place this in the queue.

message 103: by Paul (new)

Paul Culloty | 7 comments I didn't notice any thread/section on Irish History when looking through the discussions - perhaps it could be a subsection in European History?

message 104: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Paul wrote: "I didn't notice any thread/section on Irish History when looking through the discussions - perhaps it could be a subsection in European History?"
It certainly would fit there, Paul. Our group leader may want to put that topic in the queue for addition....but until a topic is created, please feel free to post information/book recommendations re: the Republic/Six Counties in European history.

message 105: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
That is a good suggestion Paul.

message 106: by Peter (new)

Peter Flom How about history of math? I see history of science, but math is different.

message 107: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
That is a book coming up.

message 108: by Mark (last edited Sep 14, 2012 03:47AM) (new)

Mark Mortensen Thanks Cheryl it looks like a good one and I just added it to my list.

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Let me place it in the cue.

message 110: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Great to hear (smile).

Cheryl, that you for your post; you could ask that question in the Presidential Series folder and the study of the presidency or you could cite the book on the President Obama thread. The books normally are voted for by the group members. So we could offer it when we do the polls.

message 112: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Cheryl......don't forget to cite the author, although his new book is not in the GR data base.

The Price of Power by Bob Woodward Bob Woodward

I think Woodward needs a new photo........that one is years old!!!

message 113: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) He's a baby in that picture......Watergate days!!!!

message 114: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig I met him not that long ago and he is doing well, and cranking out books.

Let me post this book on the Obama folder...I was waiting until release. Thanks.

His George Bush books should be under the Bush folder.

message 115: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (queenravenclaw) I think what's missing for me is to debate a few things with Plantget/Tudor era. So I was thinking of a What If thread? I think it would be interesting.

message 116: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
I am not sure I follow Krystal - could you explain.

message 117: by Krystal (last edited Oct 18, 2012 05:31PM) (new)

Krystal (queenravenclaw) I'll try to explain better sorry didn't see this till now when i searched my name within the club.

Example: What If Thread

What If Katherine Of Aragon had a boy who survived. and then we debate that topic. Like I wonder if she had a boy and it survived infancy or even childbirth would England be safe for Mary? Even though she is older it would be (boy)who rules after Henry, then Mary if something were to happen to the boy.

Ex: What If Anne Boleyn had a boy instead of Elizabeth would Henry still go on taking Mistress?

and other people might have suggestions to this

message 118: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) An alternative history thread....that might be interesting.

message 119: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
I would rather Krystal not get into an alternative history thread - I have my hands full with history itself and keeping everything straight - don't want to confuse the dickens out of anyone.

But for the off topic - community thread - you can always have these freewheeling alternative what if discussions if you like. People might chime in.

message 120: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Good point, Bentley....it is an interesting topic that can be discussed in an off-topic thread. You already have your hands full.

message 121: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Exactly.

message 122: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown I was wondering if it would be possible for a thread on Weimar Germany? I don't think there is one. Obviously, it would go under European history, but it is an area that I'm interested in.

message 123: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Interesting, I will place it in the queue.

message 124: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown Also, I was wondering if the Russian Revolution thread could be further developed into a military folder and a social folder.

I've just gotten into the revolution and it surprises me that it isn't a more popular thread, given the impact it had on the 20th century.

message 125: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
RMF - I truly wished we had more folders to go around but goodreads only gives groups a maximum of 100 and we have to combine many areas and threads that we wish we could split apart. But we will add threads which identify those areas.

Goodreads has promised more in terms of our folders but has not delivered to date and has still maxed out the number of folders to 100.

message 126: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown Well, thanks for shining a light onto my dark patch of ignorance. I didn't know that goodreads limited space.

It's easier to blame the mods! :)

message 127: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Don't blame us - we are just volunteers who love history (smile) - we have no affiliation with goodreads aside from having the site here.

message 128: by Krystal (new)

Krystal (queenravenclaw) didn't see your comments from above til now. Ben where would I post my interesting off topic ideas? The only reason for the suggestion is that it ticks me off that Henry VIII had so many wives and if he really did go by the bible why marry his brother's now widowed wive.

message 129: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Krystal, probably the best place for off topic conversation is this thread: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

message 130: by Diana (new)

Diana Rubino (dianarubino) | 11 comments Hi All,
I'd like to suggest a forum for discussing books about the presidents and first ladies.
Thanks, Diana Rubino

message 131: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Diana, we have a series of threads dedicated the the US Presidency and an indivdual thread for each president. Related works about first ladies can generally be found there.

message 132: by Diana (new)

Diana Rubino (dianarubino) | 11 comments Great! I'm learning my way around and haven't found it yet. I'll look for it. Thanks, Diana

message 133: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) If you click on the hyperlink to The History Book Club it will take you to the home page. You can scroll down to see all the folders, and expand any of the threads where needed to see all the topics. There are many. Good luck.

message 134: by Diana (new)

Diana Rubino (dianarubino) | 11 comments OK, I'm looking but couldn't find the Presidents section. Someone did send me the link, which I bookmarked, but am still not sure how to find it the usual way. Thanks! Diana

message 135: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig When you go to the club's homepage, just keep scrolling down and you will find it.

message 136: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Browne I am not sure whether this is the proper place for it but I would like to suggest a book. This Republic of Suffering. This is the book on which the PBS program, Death and the Civil War was based. If you have not seen the program, I would highly recommend it. It follows the book quite closely but of course, the book contains much more information than the program. Not to put too fine a point on it and I know this is a book forum but that program, which included the narration of two Walt Whitman poems was absolutely beautifully done. I believe that the Whitman book I have cited contains both poems. This Republic of Suffering Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust Drum-Taps and Memoranda During the War by Walt Whitman

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Colleen, this is not the proper thread for this. But thank you for your offering. Probably this post would have been best suited for the Civil War folder where folks might have read it more versus the suggestion box. This is not a suggestion box for readers but for things that members would like to see and are not.

And remember the citations are always book cover, author's photo and always the author's link:

This Republic of Suffering Death and the American Civil War by Drew Gilpin Faust by Drew Gilpin Faust

In the case of the book not cited - the book cover was available but not the author's photo - only the author's link - so two out of the three I posted above.

If the cover or author's link is not available on this site are you supposed to hunt for it on other sites?

No, James. You stick with goodreads.

If there is no cover, just use the title link. If you find the book, you will find the author. There are instances where the book is not in goodreads, so you type out title and author.

Bryan Craig James, here is an example of no book cover:

Colleen Browne I hope that I have chose the correct place for this post. I was thinking how nice it would be to have a like button after posts. I suspect this may be beyond the control of the moderators here but if it is not, I like the idea of being able to tell someone that you appreciate their post even though you may not really have a comment to make beyond that. Just a thought. Thanks.

message 143: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Colleen, thanks for the suggestion, but that is a function of the goodreads website team and something over which the moderators excercise no control.

Colleen Browne Alisa wrote: "Colleen, thanks for the suggestion, but that is a function of the goodreads website team and something over which the moderators excercise no control."

Yeah, I was afraid of that. It's a shame because I have read some great comments in my short time here and I would love to give a thumbs up to but don't really have anything to add to and I am sure that others would as well.

Colleen, there has been a lot of discussion about like buttons and of course the opposite on the goodreads forum. You might want to join the Goodreads Feedback forum and group if you would like to voice your opinion on that feature there. I for one think that the like button is of course ok and welcomed; but on the other hand - I have seen where the thumbs down option has been used adversely by some folks in reaction to just another member expressing a different opinion. So I guess there are two sides to every coin. But we do not have any control over the goodreads feature set as Alisa correctly cited.

message 146: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Browne Ok. Thanks.

message 147: by Peter (new)

Peter Flom How about a thread on great speeches in history? This could include the speeches themselves (text, audio if it exists) plus any analysis. It could also include books on particular speeches or on the art of speeches, as long as it related to history somehow.

Your suggestion has a thread:

Thank you for the suggestion.

message 149: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am new to the group, and I just thought Ii would mention the problem I am having. There are so many threads, and sometimes when I want to mention a book I have a hard time figuring out where to put it. When we get emails of messages, it is difficult to see in what file the given message is placed. That is kind of important to help determine if it is the correct thread in which to place a comment.

message 150: by Bentley, Group Founder, Leader, Chief (new)

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
Chrissie, this is a big group with a lot of folders. The folders that house the threads are in alphabetical order. I think in time you will be able to navigate around better. But for now I do not know what to recommend for you. I guess I could do an explanation of the folder titles but we thought that was not necessary here because the titles are not whimsical but fairly specific. For example we do not have folder titles that simply say Land and Sea but World War I, World War II, Help Desk. But I will give this some thought. Thank you for your comment.
