Kinsey Swartz (tvindy) | 131 comments I read this in the mid-80s, and I think it came out after 1980. The paperback version I read had an absolutely ridiculous cover with a silly-looking green alien (similar to the aliens on the Simpsons) in a very small ship, either shooting or being shot at. The book starts with the main character recently revived from cryogenic suspension into the future, where everyone is beautiful and nothing is considered offensive speech. He thinks he is very wealthy, due to all the accrued interest on his money but then learns that there has been a lot of inflation. Cryogenics is a central part of the society. No one is ever considered to be dead. They are just frozen with an estimate of how many years in the future it will be before science has advanced to the point of being able to fix them. Also, the main character is confused by names and nicknames. It turns out that usage of nicknames is very complex. There is a single super-powerful computer that everyone connects to (rather than having individual computers), which is absolutely failure-proof. But then it starts to inexplicably shut down, and the main character has to save the world.
