Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Has anyone joined Oyster, the new Netflix like service for ebooks? I'm totally intrigued by this concept. It's invite only at the moment, so I requested one. Apparently it's $10 for month for unlimited ebook borrowing. Since I have been reading so much through the library (vs buying ebooks), this could be a great thing for me. Often I'm disappointed by the books that are missing from my library's e-library. I've heard the selection on Oyster isn't great at the moment for newer books, but I can't see that until I get my invite.

(And I am numerous podcasts behind, so if I've missed a discussion on this, I apologize).

Russell | 37 comments Hi Victoria- send me you email in a personal note and I will send you an invite to Ouster. I actually really like it. Still getting itself together bit worth 10 bucks for a e-reader. :-)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Members only get two invites. I haven't set any yet, although I offered one to someone who didn't get back to me. Please send me a private message here and I will send mine to the first two people that ask.

Juliette I've joined! I requested an invite, got one within a week and signed up. It works really well with my iphone but not as happy with the iPad application. It is an amazing bargain -- five books a month for 9.95 pretty good selection of things I haven't read (or might not have tried)...read an entire book on a flight from Atlanta to SFO ...recommend highly

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments They're supposed to have an iPad app this fall. Hope so.

Shona (anovelobsession) | 178 comments I'd like to check it out but they don't offer it yet to readers outside the US and since I live in Japan, i guess I will have to wait until I get stateside again :(

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I just wanted to let those interested know... I went through my whole GR "to read" shelf (384 books) and 12% of those books are currently available on Oyster. Some of them are books my library has not had in their e-library. So I think it's worth it for me, for a while. If they don't come up with a true iPad app by the end of the year though, I will most likely drop the subscription.

Ooh, not having a real iPad app would be a deal breaker for me. When I saw that they had smart phones apps, I thought having an iPad app would be an extension of that. I really have no desire to read off of my iPhone screen :-(

message 16: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Yes, the phone app works on the iPad, using the 2x thing but it doesn't rotate to landscape. I often read that way, especially if I want my iPad plugged in to charge while reading. Plus my case doesn't support standing in a portrait fashion. It's not the greatest, though, and I would prefer a true iPad app.

message 17: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Oyster now has an iPad app, you no longer need an invitation, and they are offering new members one month free! You're welcome.

At this point, I'm don't want to shell out the dough on the expectancy that they're going to have available what I want to read at any given time. I usually pick my book based on a review, then find it. I'd never pick a book based on browsing a limited selection. I don't like feeling that my choices are constrained.

Eileen (eileen345) | 2 comments Has anyone tried Scrbd? It is just like Oyster but I like the font sizes and overall look better than Oyster. I haven't joined but did preview some books.

message 21: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I looked at it last week, but just for a few minutes. The selections seemed the same it very similar to Oyster. Now that they both have iPad apps, I think I will make a closer comparison.

message 22: by Eileen (new)

Eileen (eileen345) | 2 comments Scrbd is less expensive by about a dollar a month.

Chrystal (chrystalv) | 7 comments Is there a general consensus which site is better overall? I've not heard of either of them but I am intrigued...

message 25: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments I won't pay for another web site to read books when I all ready have audible. Com.

message 26: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Hey I use Audible for listening, Amazon for print(I'll go onto a real bookstore every now and then)Kindle also for reading (. I don't like listening on the Kindle)also use Amazon for streaming and Netflix for streaming. Searching for start ups is no longer my thing.

message 27: by Chrystal (new)

Chrystal (chrystalv) | 7 comments I like all those platforms also. I was just curious, as I currently don't subscribe to Audible, but I have used it in the past.

message 28: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments I'm not a fan girl for either of these new sites, but I don't see either as a competitor to Audible. I use Audible rarely because I am much more visual. I have a hard time following things read to me. To me these are competing with library sites (which of course are free, big advantage) and ebook retailers (where you get to "keep" the book. Sort of.)

message 29: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Just want to point out that you don't really own E books. They are on their cloud servers. From what I understand that is.

message 30: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) | 367 comments Right. That s why I used quotes for "keep". Seemed easier than a protracted discussion of leasing!
