Lauren Smith This is the nomination thread for the Locations challenge. You may nominate one task based on a location every week for four weeks or until we have 25 tasks. If the nominations go very slowly I will allow extra nominations.

Challenge description:
* Task based challenges that will be nominated
* Tasks should be do-able
* All tasks have to be centered around locations

Example:
* Read a book that takes place largely on an island
* " on the African continent
* " in a school/boarding school
* " New York
* " School for witches/kids with special "skills"/paranormal kids (for all you Harry Potter fans...)

Tasks
1. Read a book that takes place in space or on another planet.
2. Read a book that takes place in a small town or a rural setting.
3. Read a book set in a country you really want to visit
4. Read a book set in a religious building (church, temple, monastery)
5. Read a book set on an island
6. Read a book with a specific location in the title e.g. Winter in Madrid, The Venetian Affair, etc
7. Read a book set in an original fictional location. Ie. It does not exist, and it is NOT based on folklore, mythology, religion or someone else's fiction.
8. Read a book set in a city, town or village that's name begins with a C
9. Read a book set in an inhospitable environment. For example polar region or desert. It can be a real or fictional location.
10. Read a book that takes place mostly at a school/boarding school/academy of some kind.
11.Read a book set in a location that you have visited as a tourist. So not somewhere where you live.
12. Read a book where the title contains a reference to a geographical feature e.g. hill, cape, river, mountain, etc
13. Read a book in which the main character travels to at least 3 different locations.
14. Read a book in which the protagonist explores strange new lands (real or sff worlds).
Note the words "explores" and "strange new": the protagonist should journey from familiar world to an exotic (to them) one they have never been to before, then travel around this new place.
15. Read a book set in a post apocalyptic world.
16. Read a book set in a real historical place. It does not matter whether the place still exists.
17 Read a book in which railway lines or a railway journey plays a major part.
18. Read a book set in a governmental/political building like a parliament building.
19. Read a book where the ocean is important in a major way, thus set there, important to the character etc. (e.g. main character is a mermaid, takes place on a cruise liner, character is a deep sea fisherman)
20. Read a book set in a location that is isolated/cut off from the rest of civilization. (This could be because of distance from other settlements or physical barriers eg. dome/walls/fence, etc.)
21. ABC's - Read a book that is set in a location that starts with A B or C (continents not included). Only up to country size.
22. Read a book in which the main character goes to live or already lives in a foreign country. -They cannot be tourist/ on holiday etc. And by foreign, I mean foreign to them. Not to you.
23. Read a book that contains both real and fictional locations.
24 read a book in which a library or physical collection of books plays an important part
25. Read a book that is set at a university/college.

Lauren Smith Read a book set in an original fictional location. Ie. It does not exist, and it is NOT based on folklore, mythology, religion or someone else's fiction.

So basically something the writer made up completely, and not a fictional/mythological location like heaven, hell, valhalla, etc. The book doesn't have to be fantasy, sci fi or similar; it can be realist/contemporary fiction in a town, school, etc. that doesn't really exist.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Read a book set in a city, town or village that's name begins with a C

It can be fictional/mythological or real. So for example either Cape Town or Camelot would work. (No states or Provinces.)

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith As Lauren F has demonstrated, everyone may now nominate a second task :)

You guys are going to have to offer some recommendations for those!

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I've just posted a list of government buildings (on the question and answer link) e.g courthouse, police station, prison, fire station. So that one is not so hard but the railway journey is another story!

Just off the top of my head what about The Road or The Stand. Oh and I Am Legend, I haven't done an actual search yet (I already have a sequel in mind) but I am pretty sure there are thousands to choose from.

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yep, there loads of post-apocalyptic novels; it's a veyr popular theme. You should be able to find plenty of lists. I'm planning to read Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy (Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood and MaddAddam) all of which count, although the first is set before, during and after the apocalypse.

message 37: by Angelique (new)

Angelique (angelique682) Barbara wrote: "17. Read a book set in a governmental/political building like a parliament building."

Does it count if the island they live on will be taken back into the sea if they do not complete what ever quests are set before them?

message 38: by Angelique (new)

Angelique (angelique682) Zombie's count as an apocalyptic event right?

I loved Oryx and Crake. Was a bit lazy when The Year of the Flood came out and didn't get around to it, but I'm going to read the whole series In November and December.

Zombie apocalypse are a bit ambiguous I know. Mostly because the zombies are still running/staggering around trying to eat the main characters. So it is hard to say when the apocalyptic event is finished and the "post" begins. But I figure a good rule of thumb is that it is post apocalyptic once most of the population is dead and society has broken down or devolved into something more primitive.

Also it's not a problem if the book begins before the apocalypse, all books need back story. Just as long as the majority is set after the "big event."
