Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Welcome everyone. Audrey, I think it is great that you love the classics. I have been making an effort this last year to read more of the classics.

message 52: by Erika (new)

Erika (erikarae) | 708 comments Hello! I'm Erika. I will read almost everything but I'm really into the classics (Victorian British lit. is my favorite). My very long-term reading goal is to read all of the combined books that have showed up on a Boxall's 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list, but I like to participate in other reading challenges throughout the year and incorporate those books where I can. I'm almost done with the 50 books I wanted to read in 2013 and I'm looking forward to 2014!

message 53: by Ellyn (new)

Ellyn B Hey y'all! I'm Ellyn and I'm 24 and here because I'm in need of a project for my obscenely long university break! I'm looking forward to challenging myself to go outside of my normal reading patterns and chatting to all you lovely people :)

message 54: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn Hi! I'm Jaclyn! I have an (almost) 2 year old son, so I read whenever I can find time. I started the goodreads 2014 reading challenge in May or June, and I decdided on 100. I was being VERY ambitious obviously because I'm way behind, but I'm still trying! Lol next year I'll know to be a bit more realistic! I read fiction primarily...paranormal, romance, young adult, some horror, suspense/mystery, and just about anything that sounds interesting.

message 55: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Hello! I'm Steven!

I'm a series addict -- mostly Urban Fantasy, Mystery, and Thriller. I love Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Steve Berry, James Rollins, Dan Brown, Matthew Reilly, Rick Riordan, Jim Butcher, Ilona Andrews, Charlaine Harris, Stephen King... among others. :)

message 56: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Welcome, all! Don't mind the clutter--we're getting ready for 2014 as we finish out 2013, so there's a lot going on. Let us know if you have any questions.

I've read everything of Charlaine Harris and all of Rick Riordin's YA stuff. Have you read any of his adult novels! I've been curious about them!

message 59: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I haven't! But I kinda want to eventually! :)

I'm almost done with Sookie, halfway through Harper, and haven't started Aurora or Lily yet!

I haven't read any of the Sookie books, but I am a True Blood fan. I might have to try the books one day.

I didn't recognize the avatar, but as soon as I saw the list of authors, I knew it was you :) Good to see you here!

message 65: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) <3 my Barb!

I changed my picture to the one where I met Zachary Levi! :)))

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments Haha, I was the same way, Barb! I thought, "Okay, I only know one Steven here and looking at those titles, it has to be him...but that's a new avatar!" Clicked the avatar and discovered I know my Steven, hehehe. Love the pic, too, Steven!

message 67: by James (new)

James (jgtc) | 9 comments Hi, new to book clubs, reading groups, and writers' collectives/workshops. I am 52, and would like to segue back into the more-than-one-person approach to what I see, read, listen to, and write.

Trained, retired, musician, performer, composer looking for collaborative efforts of a road LESS solo, and one more often traveled, as I am very-well-acquainted with the self-designed, autodidactic curriculum.

I am seeking a Jungian afternoon, less ego-based and myopic.

I feel I need some assistance in relearning the team mentality.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

-- James Carella

message 68: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 1 comments Hi, this is my first group I've joined and I am looking forward to having some interesting conversations. I'll read mostly anything, except for cheesy romance novels you'd find at the grocery store. Right now I am reading Memoirs of a Geisha and The Modern Middle East: A History. I recently finished up A Thousand Splendid Suns and Sold.

I'm always looking for suggestions to add to my list.

message 69: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Welcome, James and Jodie!

James, I'm also a musician (though I don't play professionally). I'm a timpanist/percussionist with the local community orchestra. What instruments do you play, and what type of music do you enjoy?

Jodie, we hope your first group is everything you hoped it would be! This group is great for book suggestions. I now have more than I could ever read in a lifetime.

Eclectic in taste, and discipline, Kara.

I am a guitar player by trade, classical in music composition -- performance history: improvised fusion.

Thank you for asking.

My paternal grandfather was second-chair flute for the NY Philharmonic.
My mother didn't recognize the guitar as an instrument.

I got used to surprising everyone.

James (jgtc) | 9 comments Kara wrote: "Wow, that's wonderful, James."

So, my reading list is peppered with psych, learning, and fiction works of varying epochs.

So, I am calling the REST of 2013 as an opportunity to streamline my library, donate some books, and organizing my list of books to read.

ENJOY your Sundays !!

message 73: by Melinda (new)

Melinda | 2 comments Hi,

I'm Melinda a 29yr old from NZ. I want to crate a reading Challenge for 2014, my aim is to read as much as possible (ie read instead of spending time surfing the net!). I'm yet to decide on how many books I want to read.

Cheers

Melinda, I am guilty of that, too !!

While NET surfing is excellent, I spend TOO much time online; so for 2014, I think I am not going for a NUMBER of BOOKS read, just TRANSITIONING BACK to LITERATURE as my primary vehicle for information/entertainment.

SO DO I! I get so terribly distracted by the interwebz that hours will go by, and I don't even realize it.

That's a great idea for a New Year's resolution! I might make it mine too...if I could just pull myself away....from...ahh no, I can't. At least, not yet.

message 77: by Just (new)

Just | 1 comments Hi all. I'm Megan and just found this group. I set my challenge at the beginning of the year to read 40 books and quickly saw that I was going to go past that so increased it to 50 then 80 and finally 100. I will finish the 100th book today. Feels good having somewhere to log books I've read and keep a track of books I would like to read. Looking forward to pushing through 2014 with more than 100!

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments Welcome, Megan! We have so many creative reading challenges going on all the time, and they can definitely motivate you to surpass your 100 book record for next year. The challenges are also a great way to log and keep track of the books you've read in a unique and fun way. :]

message 82: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh Langan (ashleighreads) | 54 comments Hi! I'm Ashleigh, not new to reading by any means but still sort of new to Goodreads and this is my first group! I'm excited to participate more so in 2014 as one of my new year's resolutions is to do a little more reading outside of my comfort zone. I usually stick to contemporary literature and occasionally branch to Sci Fi and fantasy. I live in Iowa right on the Mississippi River with my boyfriend and 19 month old daughter. Glad to be here!!

Im looking to discover some new books and make some friends with similar interests. I tend to stick to Fantasy/Science Fiction/YA novels but would love to broaden my horizon.

Lisa B Buesing (lisabuesing) | 135 comments Hi. I am Lisa. I just joined the group. I like contemporary fiction, mysteries, YA and romance (mainly historical). I only have one book left to go on this year's challenge, so I am mainly joining to help meet next year's goal.

message 91: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Hi Lauraleen! Welcome to our group. There are always good discussions going on here. I have certainly been introduced to books I never would have found out about if not for this site.

message 93: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Hello everyone! I just recently stumbled upon Goodreads, and boy am I glad I did. I've never been part of a book club or challenge group, but would love to share my love of reading with other people. I can't wait for 2014 to start!

I'm a 20-year-old student who just got accepted into a university, so life might get a little bit hectic here, but I am hoping that this group keeps me focused on reading as well.

In terms of book genres, I really love science fiction and fantasy, as well as general fiction. I've been trying to get through several classics that have been on my list for a while, and my goal is to expose myself to more non-fiction.

message 94: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 28 comments Hi all I'm Vickie and I've been a part of Goodreads for about a year now but haven't joined any groups yet. I will read pretty much any fiction book on offer although my favourite genres are historical fiction, psychological thrillers and fantasy/dystopian society.

I'm trying to read more books that are outside my comfort zone and thought this group would be the best way to go about it as everyone seems to have such varied tastes. I also have a little "book duo" of my own with my best friend who is as much of a bookworm as I am and that has opened my book horizons too.

Looking forward to any recommendations that you can send my way and vice versa.

message 95: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brookehxley) Hello! My name is Brooke and I'm 20 years old. I live and go to college in New York. I love to read when I'm off from school but tend not to read over the semester while school is in session. I hope by joining I'll be motivated to make time for something I really love doing. :) Also, I really love goodreads and want to get more involved in the community aspect of the site.

Genre-wise, I'm pretty open to whatever! I've been reading a bit of YA series/sci-fi/fantasy lately. My least favorite is non-fiction and romance novels.

Hmmm, not sure what else to add other than I'm very excited to be a part of this group and for the holiday season and the new year!

message 97: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Hi! I'm Lynn from the Pacific Northwest of the US. I've been with Goodreads since 2009 and lately I've been looking for a Goodreads group with challenges, but I need a group without a lot of pressure. Looking over the posts in this group, I hope I've found it!! I'm a very eclectic reader and enjoy both fiction and non-fiction. I read most (but not all) genre and have been an avid reader since I was very young. I'm looking forward to reading with this group.

message 98: by Brian (new)

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments Welcome Cassandra, Vickie, Brooke, and Lynn! So glad to have you, and I hope you have fun with us as we finish off 2013 and begin a new year!

message 99: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Walker | 17 comments Hi! My name's Stephanie. I absolutely love reading but I think the best part is sharing good books with people that appreciate them as well. I am currently in college and don't have a lot of spare time to read, but any chance I get I try to grab a book. I'm really looking forward to sharing my personal challenges with you and discussing good books.

message 100: by Nacho (new)

Nacho (prsule) Hi! I'm Nacho, I'm from Argentina, I love to read and I've been reading my entire life... but I just found out about about Goodreads, so it's time to join the fun. I love reading just about anything.
