Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments Was just on Fandango.com and it's showing that Kubrik's "The Shining" is returning to theaters starting 27October. I don't know how long it will be playing.

The run time is listed as 1:59 as opposed to the original run time of 2:26, which is diappointing. But I missed it in the theaters in 1981, so I'll be there! Probably multiple times!

Ctgt | 765 comments Wait......cutting almost 30 minutes?

message 3: by Squire (last edited Oct 02, 2013 07:30PM) (new)

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments Well, 2:26 was the original time; Kubrick cut that by 4 minutes after it's premiere. Then it was cut agin to 1:59, so I don't know what's going on. Of course, they could just have the time wrong.

message 4: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 765 comments Of course I've seen it cut up so many times, so who knows?

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments Why would you pay money when you can watch it on tv? Its almost always on some channel at least once a week or every other week lol. Oh well..Good way to celebrate Halloween and the release of Doctor Sleep I suppose.

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments From what I could discover, the 1:59 minute version apparently is the European version which Kubrik edited. The excised scenes make reference to the outside world and Tony. Why they would show that version in American theaters is puzzling.

I'll still go see it.

EDIT: Apparently, the 1:59 version was also the one that was released theatrically in America. The 2:26 version was the uneditted director's cut.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments I'm definitely not one of those people into added or deleted scenes but I get the idea of it..makes you wonder what was cut and what they could add.

Certain movies are better experienced on the big screen, no matter how many times you've seen them. Kubrick was an amazing visual director and on the big screen the effect is completely immersive (see: tracking shots of big wheel down long hallways - as if you are moving through the screen). The same is true of Carpenter's HALLOWEEN - Carpenter composes his shots for widescreen and varied depth of focus effects. It's great to see on the bog screen and realize just how often the pale face of Michael Meyers is somewhere in the shot, at a distance.

I think it's fun to see favorite movies in theater especially if you missed it the first time. I saw the original Star Wars trilogy when they returned and it was a really fun experience.

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments The 2 hr version is the one I saw on The Movie Channel in 1981, though I don't really remember what was edited out.

And it's in theaters on Halloween night!

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 964 comments I would certainly go to see The Shining.

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments "The Shining" is being brought back into AMC Theaters for only two nights: Sunday 27Oct and Wednesday 30Oct.

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments Will this shown in the UK? I saw it advertised at the cinema, but it didn't say where they were going to screen it.. It would be nice to see this at the cinema on halloween. I love the gradual descent into madness in this film, it's creepy. H.P Lovecraft writes stories about the gradual descent into madness it's fascinating and creepy to read :D The Shining by Stephen King is one of my favourites books as well.

Mollydee | 193 comments Everything is better on the big screen. I would love to see it. I was too young at the time. I was probably reading the book about a year or two later lol!

I guess they are making a Doctor Sleep movie. Why else would they reshow The Shining?

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments AMC has been bringing back aolder movies for about 5 years now. The Shining is one of 8 that will be returning to theaters this fall/winter.

I am thrilled if this becomes a trend. There is crud out now. I watch a lot of indie movies, and repeats. If movies I was too young to see or just never got to, that were among some of the best everymade, are up on the big screen, I would be so happy. I wish they would do that with classics like The Postman Always Rings Twice.

cool! You have to spill when you get back, or as soon as possible thereafter :) I belong to a group called Getglue.com and I often find out about movies and tv series months ahead of time. I have been waiting for Carrie since like May lol! I am half and half on it. How do you redo a classic. There are good and bad examples. I like the cast on this so I am hoping it is good. My mom will want to go see it with me.

Mollydee | 193 comments So since this thread is about movies I had seen two movies that I recommend. First is called "The Loved Ones" (check on amazon, it may be on Netflix). It is a very twisted horror movie about a girl who gets the guy she wants to go to the prom with her. I am trying to figure out how to entice you without ruining anything. Let me see if I can grab my review from the other site. Okay never mind this will do (from Amazon)

"Hell hath no fury like a prom queen scorned. When Brent rejects Lola's invitation to prom, he becomes the victim of her twisted revenge. Now, the only guest at Lola's terrifying and demented prom, he must fight to survive what could be his final dance"

http://www.amazon.com/The-Loved-Ones/...

The other movie is called "Fresh Meat" it was an indie that appeared in my On Demand channel from my cable company.

again from Amazon, and lucky you guys! It is on sale for $3.99 but again, I believe it is on Netflix.

"Cannibals and criminals collide when a dysfunctional gang picks a suburban house as their hideout, only to find that the owners are having them for dinner."

http://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Meat/dp/B...

I hope you enjoy these two picks as much as I did. Oh wait, it is October. I have one more to add. This one made me cringe. And I do not cringe easily. It is called "American Mary"

Amazon "Disillusioned with her chosen profession and perpetually broke, medical student Mary Mason finds herself drawn into a shady world of underground surgery and body modification"

http://www.amazon.com/American-Mary/d...

do not know if anyone is familiar with but the Soska sisters are in this. This was one messed up film :)

Happy Early Halloween! Any questions ask me. ENJOY!

I've seen the loved ones, demented father/daughter relationship.

Haven't seen the other two but I might look out for fresh meat, thanks. :)
