Ann (disciple45) Here's my problem. I'm trying to catch up to where I'm supposed to be for this week and when I get to page like 238 the next page is numbered 179! And when the repeat section ends it is at page 271! The missing pages are truly missing - they show up nowhere else in the book! So I have requested a copy from the library! Hopefully it won't take long and I will catch up quickly! So if you don't hear from me for a while please don't think I dropped out - I'm just waiting for the book!

Ann (disciple45) I bought it at a Publisher's discount sale I don't even remember when and I only paid $5 for it -- and now I know why!! Caveat Emptor!

Ann (disciple45) I know! Like some one is going to look through an over 1000 page book to see if anything is wrong with it! Oh well, at least i'mm able to get it through the library and I'll catch up, so no real harm done!

I had quite a feeling after reading your comment :) ...May be Haresh is the suitable boy ?

- Reading about Veena and Kedarnath made me think more about how lives were affected by the Partition of India , it is quite difficult to think about those millions that immigrated from /to both sides .

- By the way ,it is quite interesting to hear about Raja of Marh again !

You could try to get it exchange somewhere. I am not sure how it works for you but there a chance a bookstore will exchange it as they may be able to return it to the publisher as it is defective.

I feel horribly ignorant of the subject. It would be great to read two actually, one from each side of the issue. Anyone have suggestions?"

I do not know any memoirs , but I read a novel that dealt with it in a part of it , it was a good read and by a Pakistani author , you can check it ...Burnt Shadows

Sue Well, I have been completely out of it, missing all the discussion. I guess I thought it was going to be in that original thread, silly me.

I've just passed the signing of the bill that will change many people's status and the relations between people. I'd forgotten that the Partition was so close to the time this novel is set. So much is happening on all levels of society. There's the trade turmoil, the religious and class turmoil and the corruption.

And in the middle of all that there are young people searching for love and having too much family help along the way.

I had the same thought about Haresh but somehow he just doesn't seem right for Lata. We certainly have enough to read through before we are likely to find the solution.

I'm enjoying all the religious and family and political intrigue too.

Lilisa | 2770 comments This week's read starts getting us into the complex issues that India continued to struggle with to this day - class, religion and politics. And he speaks to the personal friendships between individuals in groups portrayed as enemies - the realities of life. I need to do some research on how reviewers reacted, particularly those from India when the book was published. Looking forward to the next section.

Esther (nyctale) | 5194 comments This section took me forever. I was busy and I no time reading.

I have not much more to say that has not have been point out. This section does a lot to place the story in the India of the time.

Alison | 29 comments I've just now finished this section. I found it much slower to get through than the previous one. Lots of info to take in though. I am going to put the book away for tonight and start the next section tomorrow.
