This book is wonderful. New York's descriptions are awesome and it portrays daily life of the 1800s that can be applied to our current lives. If anyone has read this book I'd be glad to discuss it with you!

Rhonda (rhondak) I love Gore Vidal's books. I find them very well researched and very enthralling. I read this one some years ago, but as an history enthusiast, it was fun to read about this period in which so many things were changing. I think a woman ran for president in 1872 among other things. It would be fun to recall the details of it with you.

Petra X (petra-x) I haven't read this one of his, but I've just ordered Clouds and Eclipses.

Sure! I'd love to! I'm currently reading "The Golden Age" though it's not really the book after 1876!

Tom (tommyro) Burr was fantastic. That's the first in his American series. Julie, Rhonda, you're right when you say Vidal captures the age. Although it may be his particular take on history, I learned as much from him as any history book - and was certainly more entertained. I've always believed that novels are a more accurate historical record. The great 19th century novelists certainly captured their age. 20th Century American realist writers captured America.

I know! It's far more interesting to read about Charlie Schuyler and his family rather than taking a history textbook! I haven't read Burr though, might do after The Golden Age (I rly should go in order though!!!)

O2 I read Burr. Vidal is a fantastic writer, but dense. I might get 1876 when I run out of unread books (down to 4).
