Katherine (never_not_reading) | 5 comments Hey everybody!

I'm looking for something to set the mood for the month of October. I'd like a novel somewhere in the world between genre fiction and literary fiction. I'd prefer a female protagonist, but I love multiple perspectives as well. I enjoy historical fiction, but I'm leaving that door open as it's the themes that are most important to me. I don't want to read something entirely hopeless, but I'm not interested in a good-conquering-evil sorta plot (unless you can convince me otherwise!). I remember enjoying The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova if that gives you any ideas, but it was still missing certain factors for me.

I don't want something that is based around a romance, but I LOVE to see a budding romance between unlikely characters (opposites attracting are great) in the mix.

This could be a series or a standalone.

Thank you! This is my first time trying this and I'm super excited!

im trying to think of more, but I am at a lose right now. i tried http://booklamp.org out for yah, but it didn't give me much options on Historian. it searches the content of a book so i rely on it more... but alas not many options.

i have a shelf called h-ween but it doesn't have much of the romantic element.

oh one more thing. night circus isnt going to really "set the mood for the month of October" but its fantastic.

I have heard good things about The Witch Of Prague & Other Stories (Tales Of Mystery & The Supernatural). there is of course The original Dracula. House at the End of the Street. though, these arent really abiding by what you want.

ill be checking up on this thread cause it seems interesting.

Erin | 36 comments Try 'The Distant Hours' by Kate Morton. It's all of the things you've described, I believe. It has some romance, but its not the central theme. I'm looking forward to reading more by Morton.

Katherine (never_not_reading) | 5 comments Jas--yeah I'm going to try and read something classically October, like Dracula, even if it doesn't quite fall under some of the topics I mentioned. I've wanted to for ages!

Claire- I couldn't find Shadow of the Wind at Barnes and Noble today! I'll have to order it online because it looks really great.

Erin-- I picked up the Distant Hours today and I'm excited to read it! I read your post while I was in the store.
