Danine (dulcemea) My husband had a book set aside to read whenever he wanted to fall asleep. He knew that reading it would put him to sleep without fail. I was wondering if anyone else has a certain book that puts you to sleep or just plan bores you?

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) Gilead by Marilynne Robinson was that book for me. It should be advertised as a non-addictive sleep aid.

message 3: by Danine (new)

Danine (dulcemea) My sister in law said something to that affect about Gilead too. I haven't read that one.

message 4: by Leighann (new)

Leighann (zhelenstilo) I haven't tried to read it again since I was a junior in high school, but The Scarlet Letter put me to sleep every time I tried to read it for class. ^_^ (Never did get through it...)

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) It doesn't matter what I read if I'm tired and I read I usually fall asleep quickly. Recently that hasn't been the case. I can stay up all night reading with out a problem (except for maybe blurry vision because my eyes get tired).

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate (kateksh) | 741 comments I can't say a particular book puts me to sleep; it's a ritual. Climb in, savor some kind of "product" that smells good (currently loving Bath & Body Works "Tranquil Mint") and read until I'm sleeping.

Maphead | 295 comments Wuthering Heights

message 8: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) Wicked. Bored the pants right off of me (and on go the pajamas and POOF - sleep!)

message 9: by Renata (new)

Renata My fiance gave me a fantasy series to read by Eric Van Lustbader called The Pearl. I always had to have a nap after reading a chapter or so. Finally it occured to me that it was the book that was putting me to sleep.

The Mystery of 2012. Don't get me wrong now. This was an interesting book! However, there were a few chapters that were a bit technical and some on economics (I think 2; I know...economics and the Mayan calandar?) I would read to pages and I was OUT!

Nancy (nancybartellsbcglobalnet) "The Post-Birthday World"... everything you ever wanted to know about the game of snooker and two very self-focused people. Had to stop reading....couldn't stay awake. I even had to go back and look up the correct title before writing this. What does that say?

message 12: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (leshug) Ive had a book about Italy, think it's called The Italians, on my night stand for over a year. It will surely knock me out every time. I find reading text books for school meets the same goal, usually with bent pages and remnants of drool. LOL.
However, I can usually fall asleep reading most books, not becuase they are boring but becuause it relaxes me.

message 13: by erin buchanan (new)

erin buchanan | 188 comments I was also going to say text books and research articles. I had the hardest time in grad school staying awake while trying to read for class.

message 14: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 335 comments Reading+Bed=Sleep for me. It doesn't matter how much I love the book, how determined I am to finish, I will still fall asleep with the book on my face. That said, there have been books that I've fallen asleep reading while sitting up in the middle of the day. On the Occassion of My Last Afternoon was one of them-ugh!

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) My falling asleep while reading really isn't any particular book's fault. I have always used reading as a way to relax before bed and it usually works very well. If I start when I'm already sleepy, I'm lucky if I make it 10 pages. If I go to bed early so I can read more, I end up not getting sleepy until 2 or 3am when I crash with the book falling on the floor, or mine or my husbands face. Haha

message 16: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) My husband would laugh because I was certain I would finish Great Expectations but every time I pulled it out I would fall under the spell and pass out
Not even in bed, I'm talking mid morning afternoon anytime. It took me a full month to read and I am glad to have it behind me

message 17: by Pam (new)

Pam (pammylee76) I would have to say textbooks or anything I am required to read for school. If I don't like a book that I choose to read - or it puts me to sleep - I just stop reading it and find a different one.

message 18: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danielledore) Middlesex was so boring. At first I thought his extensive descriptions were poetic but it got old really quickly. And he drug out the story too long about the ancestors of the main character. And Moby Dick...ugh

message 19: by Jana (new)

Jana (libraryladyjana) Usually any type of text book or article for school always put me to sleep...I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't stay awake.

cindy | 48 comments Sometime ago, I read My Name is Red, and although it is a good book and I like it, I almost certainly fell asleep in just 5 minutes. It took me like 5 or 6 weeks to finally finished it. ^_^

message 21: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Any book puts me to sleep. I mean, they aren´t boring book but since I´m always tired, the process of reading puts me to sleep lol

Cyno514,
I've got the same feeling about this book. The beginning chapter is so boring that I had to speed up my reading speed otherwise I know that I would never finish that book.
But my ultimate zzzz book is Cold Mountain.. I just couldn't take my eyes open when I read this book. I haven't finished this book until today
:P

That's the odd things.... after several chapters, it's not that boring anymore, but still, zzZzzzZZzzz......

I should try Cold Mountain, Middlesex and some other books mention here.... see if they got same effect! ;p

I had a different experience with Middlesex. It was reeeeeeally long, but somehow it sustained my interest up till the end.
