Andrea Cox (andreacox) Are there any other folks still single in their late 20s? Not looking to turn this into a dating site or anything. Just wanting to make some friends who are in similar situations as me.

If this is not appropriate for this group, please forgive me. Still new here. :)

Hello Andrea! :)
Well, I'm not in my late 20's... yet. But I'll be 25 in a few months & I'm still single. ;)

message 21: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Mid twenties is close enough to the age range I was looking for. So great to meet you, Aerykah! I'm turning 28 tomorrow, actually.

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Nice to meet you too! Really? Well, I hope you have a wonderful birthday!! :D Mine isn't until November.

message 23: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Thank you! A quiet day at home with my parents and sis, then on Saturday we and my best friend will go out to dinner. It's easier to meet on Saturday, when none of us have work. I'm expecting both days to be fun. And I'm sure I'll sneak away with a book at some point, as reading is my favorite hobby.

What are your favorite hobbies?

message 24: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (last edited Aug 20, 2015 04:25PM) (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Sounds like fun! Especially the sneaking away with a book part. Hehe! ;)
Definitely reading! ;) I also enjoy photography very much. And I like to write, though I'm not so good at that. ;P
I see you're from TX. I'm in Oklahoma.

message 25: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) So we're neighbors! That's very cool. I'd love to get more involved in photography, learn more about that craft. I have a Canon PowerShot camera and love it, but my pics are so basic... Someday I'll join a photography club or something.

And I'm also a writer. Nothing published yet, still praying and seeking God's will about whether or not He wants me to pursue a career in the craft.

Another passion of mine is sports. I'm not that great at them, though I do fairly well at volleyball and enjoy playing tennis with my sister. I love watching the NBA, NHL, tennis, etc. on TV and in person, too. Last year I attended my first Mavs game, and I'm hoping to add the Stars (hockey) this year.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading the most?

message 26: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Yes, we are. :) Both of my cameras are Canon PowerShots. I love them! I have a photo blog if you ever want to take a look: Photos By Aerykah: God's World As I See It

I have never really considered pursuing a writing career-- I just do it for enjoyment.

I don't play sports. At all. But I do enjoy football. Only high school & college, not pro. Don't ask me why, but I have never enjoyed pro football. I like basketball some too, though not nearly as much as football.

I'll read almost anything that is Christian or clean fiction. Other than SciFi & Fantasy, though I have read some books in those genres too. I especially like Historical & Suspense (generally contemporary). What about you?

message 27: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) I saved your blog to come back to when I have more time to give it the attention I'm certain it deserves.

Enjoy your writing! There's something intensely pleasurable about creating a story from nothing but your imagination. Okay, so there's research and stuff too, but you know what I mean.

No, I get it. Football is way more fun to watch when there aren't millions of dollars involved. And the egos that come with it. College ball is pretty fun to watch, though football is not my go-to sport by any means. That would be Mavs basketball.

Sounds like a great selection of genres. I read mostly Christian fiction, though I read nonfiction for research and Christian living books on occasion. I tend to read a lot of suspense (think Lynette Eason and Dee Henderson) and historical, but I'm loving several contemporary authors right now, particularly Beth K. Vogt and Melissa Tagg. A wide variety. Sometimes, when I stick to one genre too many books in a row, all the storylines start sounding the same. I've learned to mix it up for my own sanity.

message 28: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Thanks. I hope you enjoy it. :)

There is! And my imagination loves to be let loose. ;)

"My team" is the Oklahoma Sooners. And I always look forward to football season-- which starts in a couple week!! :D

Lynette Eason & Dee Henderson are both great authors! I just finished reading the third book in Lynette's Hidden Identity series. :) I don't know if I've read Beth K. Vogt yet, but I do enjoy Melissa Tagg's books. Have you read Colleen Coble, Denise Hunter, Dani Pettrey, Irene Hannon..?

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) I've read one or two of Colleen's. Was disappointed to discover an expletive in one. That drives me nuts in Christian fiction. Have yet to try the other authors, but they're all in my tbr pile.

Hope your Sooners have a great season this year!

If you read Beth's books, start with Wish You Were Here. It's the first fiction book she wrote and still my favorite, though all of hers have been wonderful, in my opinion.

Really? I don't remember that.

Thank you! (Special thanks seeing that you're a Texan. Lol!)

Okay. I checked & I have read "November Bride"-- really enjoyed it. :)

What type of movies do you like?

message 31: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Yep. Can't remember which book it was, though, it's been years since I read it.

I may be a Texan, but I appreciate good sportsmanship more than die-hard, cutthroat competitiveness. Plus, have you seen the OKC Thunder? They've always had a pretty great NBA team. They're my second team to watch, after the Dallas Mavs, of course. :)

November Bride was such a sweet book. I'm sure you're going to love all of Beth's other books as well.

Movies... another passion of mine. Action, drama, romantic comedies (the cleaner ones; think Letters to Juliet and Leap Year), old b&w films, musicals... My favorite movies right now (I'm always finding new favorites, but these are ones I tend to keep in my faves list) are the Bourne movies, Mission Impossible films, Letters to Juliet, and We Are Marshall.

What about you?

message 32: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Well, that's good. ;) I'm not the cutthroat type of fan either, though I do give our Texas fan friends a very hard time. Good-naturedly, of course. And they give it right back. We have a grand time with it. ;)

Hm... Your list sounds much like mine. ;) I love old b&w films! And old color films. ;) Seems like not many people our age like the old films. They don't know what they're missing out on! I like all the ones you listed, except for We Are Marshall-- don't think I've seen that one. I've kinda been in the mood for old tv shows here lately. Hogan's Heroes, Five Mile Creek, Christy, Zorro..... I really like the movies the Kendrick brothers have done: Fireproof, Facing the Giants, Courageous... Really looking forward to the new one they have coming out! :)

Do you like Jane Austen?

message 33: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Whenever you see We Are Marshall, make sure you have a box of tissues close at hand! I always cry through that entire movie, but it's still one of my faves. I laugh a little too, though, so it's not all sad and weepy.

I'm looking forward to War Room too!

Have you seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? Favorite musical! Although that changes every time I watch Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly in something. :)

I've read only one or two Austen books, but I have enjoyed them. I just rewatched the Keira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice last night. Love that movie! I also enjoy the Ciaran Hinds version of Persuasion.

What's your favorite Austen book and movie?

message 34: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Georges (tamarasinnamon) Oh, I love We Are Marshall!!! And Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!!! :D

message 35: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Which brother is your favorite in SBSB?

message 36: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Georges (tamarasinnamon) Gideon probably, he hilarious. I love how he stands up to Adam too, even being the youngest. :) Who's yours?

message 37: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) The same! Gotta love that adorable face and the spunkiness you mentioned in standing up to the eldest brother.

message 38: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
A sad one? Mm... I tend to stay away from those for the most part.

YES!! I love that movie! :D Never cared all that much for Fred Astaire so he has no hope of taking the place of SBFSB in my heart. ;) I think Gideon's probably my favorite too. He's just so likable! ;) Funny thing: my brother's cat is meowing persistently at the window & we were just saying how it reminded us of Gideon... ;P

I've read three of her books. My favorite is Pride & Prejudice -- I've read it several times. And my favorite adaptation is the P&P mini-series. Sorry to tell ya, but I can't stand the Keira Knightly version. :/

message 39: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Georges (tamarasinnamon) Haha, we're always qouting SBFSB!
I just watched the Kiera Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice. I didn’t like it either. The longer one is sooooooo much better!!!

I haven't seen it in too long... SBFSB, I mean. ;) This is making me want to watch it!
Yes!! The P&P mini-series is probably one of my top-quoted movies. I have seen it so many times... My dad & brothers even told me to not bring the Keira version into the house again. :P

This is a great conversation going guys!!!(:
However I must ask
... I'm not sure if I should.... Hehe.... Why is the Keira Nightly Version so bad? However I have never saw neither if those movies. Haha :P So you must ignore my sheer ignorance in the subject. However I have Saw SBSB Lol. Not very into romance but that movie is funny (;

Okay, um...
WARNING: Personal opinion here! I apologize in advance if this offends.

My biggest issue is that I thought the cast was totally wrong for the story and the acting was..... *ahem* bad. Also, it's not really like the book, esp. when compared to the mini-series. Yes, I understand that they had to cram it all into one movie, but still.
That's all I'll say, but I just have to share this blog post that I absolutely loved-- http://naomiblog15.blogspot.com/2015/...

As for SBFSB... even my brothers & nephew like that movie! ;D

message 43: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Totally respect the fact that y'all prefer the miniseries version. However, I disagree on the cast of the Knightly version being all wrong. I thought everyone hit their roles perfectly. But then I love Donald Sutherland and thought the brooding Mr. Darcy was scrumptious.

Anytime there's a remake, I try to treat them as completely different entities, because comparing them to each other is like comparing today's actors with those of generations ago... they just don't compare well, as things advance or regress over time.

All that being said, I'm glad we're all fans of Austen. Which book of hers, other than P&P, would you recommend I start with? P&P is one I've actually read, so that's why I'm excluding it here.

*looks around embarrassed* I just am so behind in this conversation :P I don't know who she is neither. Lol.
Ignore my ignorance on these topics. Hahaha

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
Yes, and I'm totally okay with people liking the Knightly version too. Everyone has a right to their own opinions, after all. That's why I warned that what I said was just that: my opinion. Some people really get bent out of shape about stuff like that so I try to say what I think without putting it in a way that sounds hateful or disrespectful of other people's taste. (Only if I know a person really well & we know each other's sense of humor do I get a little... shall we say :sarcastic? ... about my opinion on movies like this.) It's hard when you can only see the words a person types, isn't it? I'm glad you seem to be pretty easy going, Andrea. ;)

I thought I had a pretty open mind about that movie too-- I really wanted to watch it pretty badly when it came out. Just not the right one for me, unfortunately.

I have read Sense & Sensibility and Emma-- both are very good! And I have been told numerous times to read Persuasion, but I haven't done that yet.

Andrea wrote: "Mary Kate, have you seen Pirates of the Caribbean or Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit?"

Those are both very good! :)

message 47: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) Ooh, Persuasion is another great book. Definitely give it a read sometime. I'll keep S&S and Emma in mind to read soon.

I really like Knightly in Jack Ryan. It's my favorite role of hers to date.

And thank you! I try to be as laid back as possible. Life is too short to stress out all the time.

message 48: by Aerykah, Co-Moderator (new)

Aerykah | 3571 comments Mod
I plan to. I think I need to get a paper copy of it, though. Reading it on my kindle just doesn't feel right, you know?

I agree, it's my favorite of hers too. :)

message 49: by M.K., Creator And Moderator 🎉 (new)

M.K. Aneal (mkaneal) | 6178 comments Mod
Sorry, I'm back(; Hehe.
Yes I have seen the Pirates of The Caribbean. However I haven't saw Jack Ryan, looked like a good one though!! Haha(:

message 50: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Georges (tamarasinnamon) The reason I didn't like the Kiera Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice is because I feel like there were inconsistencies for the time period they were trying to portray. I didn't mind the acting, I actually like it, but I couldn’t get over how wrong the whole story felt. I agree with Andrea though, you kinda have to think of it as a completely different story to enjoy it completely. There's my humble opinion. ;)
