Maddy | 86 comments Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris by Paul Gallico and King Solomon's Mines by H. Rider Haggard. I enjoyed the first one considerably more than the second, but both were entertaining.

Kathleen | 62 comments The Secret History by Donna Tartt is one more list book I won't be reading. I gave it a try, but definitely not for me.

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I finished I Robot yesterday. It was written in the 50s and Asimov discusses the ethics of AI. Only now are our politicians trying to grapple with it. I'm in the middle of reading The Grass is Singing. It's 39c today and I was getting a little tired of reading about how hot and dry it was when it was getting hot outside.

I'm on the final 20 pages of this!

Kim by Rudyard Kipling

This book would fulfill Task 5; Kim is a child through most of the book and a teenager by the end.

Kathleen | 62 comments Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Excellent.

Maggie | 106 comments Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I liked the plot and the characters, but the writing was rather long-winded and repetitive.

Mia | 1185 comments V. by Thomas Pynchon. Pynchon just isn't for me.

so go ahead and call me a Philistine, I deserve it

Yrinsyde | 295 comments The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. I thought it was an OK read with some good tense moments. I didn't think Ripley was homosexual - he seemed too invested in himself to fancy another person. An interesting portrait of someone with a possible anti-personality disorder.

Amanda (agmitkov) | 1 comments The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. A nice short read, but the film was still infinitely better.

Nocturnalux | 465 comments Suite Francesa Irène Némirovsky

Brilliant for what it is, it hurts to think what it could have been had the Nazis not butchered the author.

Much more enjoyable than I had anticipated!

Cane by Jean Toomer and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. I liked Perfume more than I expected to, it has some humor to offset the dark bits.

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I finished reading A Christmas Carol by Dickens yesterday. First read for me, though I have read other Dickens before. It's interesting as a piece of social history. I found the notes added interest to the story.

Maddy | 86 comments The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis which I very much enjoyed, and The Return of Philip Latinowicz by Miroslav Krleža which I didn’t quite understand but came to appreciate.

The Radetzky March by Joseph Roth. Slow-paced story but lovely writing.

Krleza has another 1001 list book with a higher avg rating on goodreads, On the Edge of Reason, which I have on my to-read list. He isn't read much by English- language readers but a few of my GR friends have read it- Amanda may have read it in French possibly.
