You know they do in some spots, like reviews and other stuff, but not everywhere, plus you can just hit reply and say "i like" :) Or we can just say DITTO

I like the purloined letter as well!

I recently finished The Fox by D.H. Lawrence and Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, both very good books. Last night I finished All quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque which was brilliant but also the most gruesome and depressing thing I've read in a long while, maybe ever. I definitely need something light now!

Edwin Priest | 45 comments Finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency last night, also on the SciFi and Fantasy Bookclub shelf. Great stuff!

Love that book.

message 410: by Karena (new)

Karena (karenafagan) The Ground Beneath Her Feet. I may need to go and refresh myself on the myth it's based on. Interesting book. Definitely not my last Rushdie. I have The Satanic Verses slated for next month.

Great book this. Now try Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World for a completely, but not, different vision of this.

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 154 comments Just finished Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. I moved through it slowly because the story is told through footnotes on a poem. Lots of flipping back & forth, lots of poetic languages to sink your teeth into. I went in with trepidation, but enjoyed it a lot. Despite the high degree of "metafiction-ness" it's still a compelling story with more than a little humor. And even...slapstick? Who knew?

Cataract by Mykhailo Hryhorovych Osadchyi. Outstanding book.

message 422: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 16 comments Cain by Jose Saramago. Five stars for a subversive, funny little read.

message 423: by Erika (new)

Erika (erikarae) Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh.

Written in a Scottish dialect, crude, dark, and full of filthy language and graphic depictions of heroin addiction. Not an easy pill to swallow (no pun intended), but pretty brilliant.

message 424: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (flower_chops) | 88 comments Just finished The Sound and The Fury. My goodness this is just incredible. Emotionally fatiguing but just some awe-inspiring writing. Looking forward to more Faulkner when I've recovered! Five stars (would give more if I could!).

message 425: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Flynn (stephanieflynn) My first and only Faulkner was As I Lay Dying. And I hated it. Read it in high school. Wrote a scathing critique of it. Got an A on my paper with the comment " I guess you didn't like the book"

message 426: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) I've read Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and Light in August. Loved them both, and plan on reading a lot more of him.

Edwin Priest | 45 comments White Teeth, quite impressive.

message 434: by Kai (new)

Kai Coates (southernbohemian) | 42 comments The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Started out very good, but I got bogged down with the actual memoirs bit.

It was pretty good. I'll follow it up with The Hours later on.

message 441: by Mekki (new)

Mekki | 171 comments I just finished The Stranger. An outstanding first novel.

Camus questions life, religion, death and a person's relationship with world. Another book to reflect on.

Finished The Devil's Pool by George Sand. I really like George Sand's prose and I actually also liked the story. But as it is listed as a gothic tale I had hoped for something creepier.
