Donna (electrogirl68) | 116 comments Does anyone here belong to www.bookcrossing.com?

I was very into it a couple of years ago but haven't released any or been active for a while. Perhaps we could swap between ourselves on here? What do you think?

Heather (hpduck) We have talked about doing that before, unfortunately, as most of us are in separate countries, this often will not work...

I'm happy to post overseas but appreciate other people may not be. Never mind, just a thought.

Hey there Donna. I was planning to sign up on Bookcrossing sometime this month. Does it cost anything? My understanding was that it would be a neat way for me to get rid of some books by setting them free in the world for random people to discover. Is that the basic gist? I'm not interested in swapping so much as just depleting my recent pile. I try to do library books only but somehow I always inherit a collection.

(P.S. - Hoping to finish Time Trav. Wife this weekend!)

I have done Bookcrossing for a few years. It is fun but be aware the rate of books registered as found is about 10%. There are two other sites Paperbackswap and Bookmooch where you can register books and people can request the ones you have registered. You get points for registering and sending books then use those points to ask for books. PBS seems to be for the U.S. only, where BM seems more global.

Kim | 3 comments I just checked out BookCrossing and it looks really neat. Do you have to purchase "supplies"? Is there a free way to do it?

message 7: by Donna (new)

Donna (electrogirl68) | 116 comments You can print off the free labels. That's all you really need. I used post it notes and ordinary see through food bags if it was raining.

Wanda (wanda514) You know, this sounds like fun. I will post some books I have up for grabs once I move. If anyone is interested, I will be happy to send them to you.

I am like, Molly -- I don't want to swap or trade -- I just want to deplete. When I post them (in a few weeks), just send me a message with your address and I will be happy to send them to you. Honest!

And, don't worry one bit -- I am not a weirdo or some crazy stalker person. To toot my own horn, I am as honest and as kind as the day is long. I have done this with a few of the ladies I have met on Goodreads. It's fun to have a book arrive in the mail rather than a bill. And, it's FREE. Yeah!

message 9: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I'll take you up on that one Wanda!! Just let me know what you want to get rid of :))

John You could register the books through Bookcrossing and send them as a controlled release, where you send them to a person - rather than a wild release.

Goodreads also has a Bookcrossing discussion group but we could list available books here.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 61 comments I just joined Bookcrossing and received some supplies that I ordered. I know you don't have to order these materials, but I just wanted to start out with them. I haven't released anything, yet, but I plan to very soon.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I've been an avid member of bookcrossing for years. I manage an OBCZ (Official BookCrossing Zone) which simply means I keep a shelf full of registered books in my favorite local smoothie shop. I also do Wild Releases when I travel, especially at highway rest areas (safety stops) and the breakfast bars and laundry rooms of motels. In addition, I've a few local real-life friends that are members of BC (and GR!) and we share books at events.

It's kinda addicting. It's true that most books, when wild released, just 'disappear' (which is frustrating because we cannot fathom why so few people make a Journal Entry when they've just received a free book). But those few Catches do provide the Skinnerian random reinforcement to keep us going.

I'm always looking for sources of books for my OBCZ. Bargain day at the library's book sale, yard or tag sales, friends who need to empty their shelves, bag'o'books at the thrift store.... so if anyone wants to send a box of books to Nevada I'll pay for media mail shipping!

(Please note that it's only worthwhile if it's at least 1/2 dozen books, and let me ask you not to send Romance as it tends to languish on my OBCZ due to lack of interest.)

Bookcrossing.com has overhauled the site recently so it's worth another look if you haven't been in a while. In a lot of ways it's easier to use now for new folks. But there's still a lot of different ways to have fun there, so feel free to ask me, here or there, anything at all. On BC I'm cherylllr.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 61 comments Thanks, Cheryl, for the offer to help newbies like me in Bookcrossing. I'll probably have some questions.

Robin | 263 comments I joined bookcrossing a few years ago, was not really too active. I did however release a book in the wild once. For fun of course at a doctors office. It was a release that made sense b/c the book was kind of a chick-lit - mommy - lit type book. And the location was a OB-GYN's office. LOL!
Also I have no idea what happened to the book b/c nothing as ever been posted on the site about it. It has like Cheryl said "disappeared" but who knows maybe one day it will resurface. :)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments I have a box I was thinking about donating to the library that I might just register on BC now and release them into the wild. Probably have some that would work for your shelves too Cheryl.
