Children's Books discussion

My 12-yr-old son has loved the Fablehaven and Beyonders series by Brandon Mull, and I was wondering if anyone can suggest other authors he might enjoy. He also really enjoyed the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series by Michelle Paver. Basically, I think he is a fantasy fan, but isn't quite ready for books written for adults in this genre.

Oh gosh, there are hundreds of fantasy books out for his age now, and many of them excellent. Just off the top of my head, he might try The Fairy-Tale Detectives, Inkheart both with a somewhat similar set-up or feel to Fablehaven. Or Artemis Fowl, The Sea of Trolls, A Wizard of Earthsea, The Cabinet of Wonders, The Amulet of Samarkand, The Extraordinary and Unusual Adventures of Horatio Lyle for some other fantasy involving a little danger, a little creepiness, some monsters... If he wants humor in his fantasy I recommend The Facttracker and The Strictest School in the World: Being the Tale of a Clever Girl, a Rubber Boy and a Collection of Flying Machines, Mostly Broken. Most of these are the first book in a series, and/or the author has other books out, too, so if he finds something he likes, it'll get him a few more books to follow up with.

P.S. I meant to add Leviathan, too, which I have not read, but my 11-year old son really liked.
Meanwhile, we're all (me and two 11-year-olds) in the middle of How to Catch a Bogle at the moment. I don't guarantee that it will be satisfying in the end, but so far we're enjoying it, and it fits that profile of spunky child going up against creepy monsters amid somewhat mysterious circumstances.
