Meanwhile, we're all (me and two 11-year-olds) in the middle of How to Catch a Bogle at the moment. I don't guarantee that it will be satisfying in the end, but so far we're enjoying it, and it fits that profile of spunky child going up against creepy monsters amid somewhat mysterious circumstances.
