Yay! I hope you like it. I was torn between rating it 4 or 5 stars as I don't give out 5 star ratings easily but just enjoyed it too much to rate it lower.

message 114: by Zara's Retreat (last edited Nov 17, 2013 04:06PM) (new)

Zara's Retreat My partner is Joanne♥~Bookworm Extraordinaire and I'll be reading:

I'll read: A Treasury of Royal Scandals The Shocking True Stories of History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperors by Michael Farquhar
Joanne's rating: ★★★★
Date read: Mar 2003

My rating: ★★★★★
Date: November 11th.

Comment: I really enjoyed this book. I was already aware that both royalty and popes got up to some naughty things, but it seemed to be what the popes did that really had me reeling. I also came to the conclusion that what the royals got up to then makes all the so-called bad things that the royals of today get up to pale into insignificance.

Highly recommend any one interested in this sort of thing to read this book.

I'm going to see if there is another book on my partner's list that I might like to read next.

message 130: by Trip (last edited Nov 06, 2013 01:52PM) (new)

Trip (shardsofromance) My partner is Trisha :)
I chose: Fat Vampire A Never Coming of Age Story by Adam Rex
Trisha's Rating: 3 stars
Date Read: November 2nd, 2012

My rating: 3 stars
Date finished: November 2nd, 2013
So how to explain my enjoyment of this book, I guess I shall start by saying some of the things that I loved a lot during this book such as:
- Comics
- Lunch
- Bike
- Parka [I think that's what it was]
- Friends
- Multi POV
- Symbolism [At least I think that's what it is,anyway I'm go with it]
Also as much as it is a vampire book it doesn't exactly take itself seriously on the fantasy side, in fact i'd go as far as to say it is rather realistic at times at least in many of the interactions and the characters. They're what kept me reading most of the time as each one made me feel for them in some way or other and not one of them was perfect, although they'd like you to believe they are.
Anyway there are many unexpected ideas tat are placed in the book, although that may be because if I'm being honest i thought it was going to be some fluffy romantic vampire story. Where the guy gets the girl, love at first sight etc... you know the ones or you should.
Of course its much more! I fell for Doug from the start, despite his imperfections which there are many that just grow. Sejal I didn't have as much of a connection with, but I feel she was sort of left on the sidelines even with her own POV.

Right I don't want to make this too long, yet I'd just like to explain the reason behind my 33 star rating with 3 simple points.
- Television show
- Ghost superhero
- Elder vampire
All great idea and ones that could work great alongside each other, yet I think the author either got bored with each of them/didn't know which one to use. Perhaps if the book had been longer or separated into two this would've worked out better, been able to expand on them. The book being short left most of these undeveloped or turning up for a couple pages, only to then be rarely mentioned. It didn't help that one of these caused a huge change to the Mc half way through, made seem a little out of place.
My other problem was the ending, i'm sure many people will/do love the author for what he did and yet i'm sorry to say it was lost on me.
I'm all for 'happily ever after'

Recommended to anyone looking for something different, particularly in vampires.

Esther | 42 comments My partner was Kathy and i choose to read

Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1) by Veronica Rossi
Her rating: 5 Star
My Rating: 5 Gigantic stars

Kathy i am so glad i choose this book. I started reading it on Saturday during my 10 hour road trip but didn't really get into it. About 70 pages in i almost gave up on it and I decided i was going to give it 50 more pages so on my road trip back home today i started reading it again and i didn't put it down until it was finished. This is by far the best book i've read this year and I was going to read 5th wave as well this month but i've decided to read the second book in this series instead...
