I would love to meet up, but I will be a church group, youth trip for outreach, and I have no idea how that would work.. LOL! I can ask, if she wants to.

I always try to avoid the DC area when traveling to Raleigh NC. I really wish PA would build future Rt 99 all the way down the state & stay west of DC until you're south of DC, then connect into Rt 95. It is way to congested to be able to stand going near DC.

It took me over 3 hours to go from about 495/95 to the Quantico exit one time. It's why I try to avoid that area as if it's the plague.
@Missyb - the only problem with that is the mountains, anything west and you are going to hit them. You can take 81 down the Shenandoah Valley but you still will have to cross back over. It is probably more relaxing though.
@Norma - The mixing bowl is the name of that area. On my way to Florida, I had the same experience in the same location. I think they've improved it by adding lanes and HOV but I avoid that side of the Beltway if possible.

@Marie - I always think regency novels when I hear the lake district in England. I just read a Balogh with travel there. And of course there is Elizabeth with her aunt and uncle from Pride and Prejudice. It must truly be beautiful. Am I thinking of the right place?
I live near Ann Arbor, MI, USA.
I would get together but only if it were in the 30 minute range. The suburb area is actually pretty large in time, constant sprawl. Traffic makes it even longer to get to some places. Normally I avoid traveling south as it is towards DC and the traffic gets worse. But I go downtown on occasion, always avoiding high rush hour.
@Norma- I used to go 95 to 87 to 84 (sometime 90) to 91 to 89. I got caught in a 2 hour traffic jam on 91, and it seemed each time I went that way, I got traffic that slowed me at least an hour. I just stopped. Trying to get to 87 from 95 was usually horrid too. New York traffic... I hate traffic. I love google maps and the traffic overlay. I'm into big time avoidance.
Here's a map of the DC metro. The right is the easy to understand map. The left is to scale distance wise.
