Jay Howard (jay_howard) Now that G20 is up and running here's the start of G21. At this stage I just need to know who wants to join - add your name by posting on the Registration thread or directly here (if we don't already have 10 names). Once the list is full I'll PM you that it's time for the 2nd stage - the what/when/how/where stuff. For now we just need to gather 10 members.

09 Oct - Michele McGrath https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
12 Oct - Rebekah Ruth https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
16 Oct - Patrick de Moss http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

Jay Howard (jay_howard) OK - we now have 10 members so this group can start. Check your PMs for instructions please.

ADENIKE
The system isn't letting me PM you - please PM me and I'll reply. Basically, though, I need you to sign in by posting here with the GR link to your book. Thanks.

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Thank you Eli, Jade, Red, Liz, Patrick and Vivek - perfectly executed and VERY prompt!

Frederick - I don't have a note of you asking to join another group. If I've missed it my apologies, but unless Michele, Rebekah, Sam or Adenike don't sign in I'll have to put you down for G22.

Once everyone's signed in I'll put up the list of who reviews who and how to do it.

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Hi Rebekah, glad you're still with us.

Now the problem we have is Adenike - tried to PM again today and it still won't let me. I hope she gets to look at this thread soon...

message 17: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments This seems to be a recurring problem here. In the other group, no one ever got ahold of Sherrod, as far as I know, for the same reason - even though I reported it to Goodreads. You have to friend him to send him a PM, but the 'send friend request' button just bounced me back to his author page. I think it's a glitch.

message 18: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Thanks for the info, Kathy - I've tried a friend request to Adenike so we'll see if that works...

Adenike (ade_the_writer) Hello Lovely's! I'm glad to be in the group! Jay! Thanks for sending me the email. Don't know why my PM doesn't work. Either way, here is the link to my GR book, "I Love Him, He Loves Me not" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... and here's the book trailer: http://youtu.be/yEgurIKdq-E

Let me know if I put the GR link in correctly.

And then... what do I do next?

Jay Howard (jay_howard) GROUP 21 - moderator
K.A. Krisko
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

START DATE: 02 November 2013

END DATE: 25 January 2014

Please remember the commitment you are making to your fellow group members. If you don’t think you can manage to do 4 book reviews between these dates please let me know now. I will find someone else for this group and you will be able to choose a later group that will be more suitable for you. If you pull out after the start date for any reason it is the other members who will be faced with the problem of finding a replacement, or missing out on reviews, through no fault of their own. Please don’t ask the moderators to chase after replacements as we just don’t have the time.

It is the responsibility of the author to get their book to their reviewer in a format the reviewer can manage. When the file is received, please post a GR link to the book in this thread so that the author has confirmation that reviewing of the correct book has started.

There are no set dates for the start of each round. You can each work at your own pace, within the limits of the round deadlines. All reviews must be posted by 25 January.

When you have posted your review on GR please post a link to your review in this thread.

All reviews of 3, 4 or 5 stars must be posted to GR, Amazon .com and Amazon.co.uk.

If the rating is 1 or 2 stars, the review must be posted to GR but the author should be asked if they want the review to go to Amazon or not.

Postings to any other sites are by agreement by both author and reviewer.

In the next post are the listings for the 4 review rounds, the who reviews who stuff. You don’t have to put forward the same book for every round, but you can only ask for one review per round.

Happy reviewing, everyone :)

message 22: by Jay (last edited Oct 30, 2013 03:29PM) (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) If I’ve missed something that results in you being asked to review someone who has already reviewed you, please let me know asap. ‘Sign in’ by pasting the GR link to the book you want reviewed, and start swapping books ready for round 1 once I’ve posted that we’re all signed in and there are no clashes needing a rearrangement of the order.

Jay Howard (jay_howard) OK, folks, that's me finished here. I'm off to help group 22 get sorted. If you have any problems/questions try helping each other out first. If you get stuck your group moderator is Kathy Krisko.
Byee!

Red Mallard (RedMallardBooks) | 3 comments I can't seem to message Adenike Lucas -- if she wouldn't mind messaging me (or adding me on twitter, redmallardbooks is my username), I was wondering if I could get a copy of her work on Kindle. Thanks!

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Folks, you will need to 'friend' Adenike first as she does not accept messages on Goodreads from non-friends. Click the 'add friend' button on her page & you should be able to send a message at the same time. If this DOESN'T work for someone, let me know - I know Jay is in touch with her & should be able to run interference! Thanks!

Hey Red! I sent you an email this morning. Yes, my book is available for Kindle. I can email you the pdf, and it will work just fine. I can send it to your kindle. You'll have to add my email address to your kindle settings or I can just email it to you. Let me know how you want to do this.

Adenike (ade_the_writer) Hello Group! Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll see if I can change my settings to accommodate everyone. If you want. Just in case, you all can send me pdf's of your book to [email protected]. I also can take epub.

Hope that helps.

Adenike (ade_the_writer) I've started reading Niamh of the Golden Hair. I'm on chapter 3. I'm enjoying so far.

message 34: by Red (new)

Red Mallard (RedMallardBooks) | 3 comments I'd like to step out -- my apologies. I'm not going to have enough time to do serious reading and reviews for these titles, and that's not fair to the authors. Additionally, if erotica is going to be a problem, I should have never entered in the first place, as I exclusively write erotica. Please take my book out of the rotation, and accept my sincerest apologies for mucking up the group.

message 35: by K.A. (last edited Oct 30, 2013 08:50AM) (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Michele - the first book I ever reviewed here was a BDSM romance, which is not exactly in my regular reading rotation. I evaluated it on its writing, characterizations, and technical presentation rather than its content (and ended up giving it 4 stars). It's possible we can get someone else to step in, though. Let me know via PM whose book you're having issues with, if you will.

Red - I'm sorry you are stepping out. Folks, we will plug someone else in as soon as we can.

message 36: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Liz has volunteered to take your place for Round 3, Michele. Sam therefore should review Liz's book rather than yours in that Round, to be fair. Liz, Jade & Sam, could you correspond please? Thanks, everyone.

And Eugene will be joining us to backfill for Red...

Really glad you asked that, Michele. This is the first review group I've participated in and two of the ten books are erotica. I was wondering if that was likely to be the case each time. It's definitely not my normal choice and I don't want to do a disservice to the author by reviewing when it's not my thing. Sigh.

I'm in the same boat as Michele. As I said in my comment to Michele, I feel like I'd be doing a disservice to the author. I'll try to do as you suggest (review on writing and other technical considerations) but I'm wondering if there's a way, in the future, I can avoid having to read this genre.

I'm not making a judgement about this genre. I know it's very popular and people have every right to write it and read it. But I don't enjoy it at all.

I imagine it's really difficult to figure out how to assign books to authors for review if preferences have to be considered. But I also think, if there's a way to do it, authors would prefer to have their books reviewed by people who tend to fall into their target audience. Maybe have genre groups instead of random groups?

For example, my book would probably be classified as something like a "chick-flick." So I feel bad if a guy has to read it and it's not his thing. (Although a few guys that I know, have read it and liked it, the majority of my audience is female.) Any thoughts on this?

message 39: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Folks, we kind of take what we get here. The mods, myself included, are not able to spend the time to separate out by genre - besides which, in my experience, that results in some genres getting a lot more reviews than others, due to the amount in the market (for example, you might be able to put together fantasy fic groups fairly quickly, but mystery groups would form much slower).

We don't get a lot of erotica here, but we get some. There are some genre-specific review groups on Goodreads, I belong to one...but this isn't one, unfortunately. C'mon - we can all recognize good writing when we see it, whether it's 'our thing' or not. I've reviewed everything from erotica through religious pieces that are not my religion. I like to think I'm able to be impartial. This group is more of a 'job' than a pleasure - I'm getting something in exchange, so I'm as business-like as I can be when reading & reviewing what I get. You can also mention in your review that it's something unusual for you to read - I often do that when it's YA, and I'm, um, not Y.

Largely agreed. I'm not a fan of erotica either, though I'll do my best to review them based of the writing, characterization, etc.

That being said, I'm not crazy about the idea of groups for specific genres. (I've heard of people giving low ratings to "competing books" in their genre, and though I don't think that'd happen here, it still leaves me feeling iffy about the concept. If that makes sense. Maybe this is just one of those things I have to accept, maybe there is a way around it after all. Just throwing in my two cents.

message 41: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Ruth (rebekahruth) | 15 comments Appreciate the thoughts. Not trying to be a whiner. I also realize I'll be reading plenty of things that aren't what I'd normally pick up. I think there's definitely value in that. I guess I was just surprised when two of the 10 were erotica...so that's why I was asking for thoughts on it.

No worries. I can be a big girl ;)

message 42: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Thanks, Michele. We so far have not eliminated any genres, preferring instead to let authors sign up if they are willing to take what they get and giving every author a fair shot at boosting their review numbers (the number, at least at first, is as important as the score, since Amazon boosts books with more than 10 (or maybe 15) now reviews higher in their rankings, I believe.)

message 43: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1702 comments Folks, please note the following, which is part of the set of 'rules' posted in Post 24 upthread:

All reviews of 3, 4 or 5 stars must be posted to GR, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

If the rating is 1 or 2 stars, the review must be posted to GR but the author should be asked if they want the review to go to Amazon or not.

This is what you signed up for. This information is available in numerous areas in this Group including the FAQs, so it shouldn't be news to anybody. We pride ourselves on the honesty and integrity of our members and that relies on real, true opinions being expressed so READERS can make accurate purchasing decisions.

Thank yew...
