Christina Stind | 180 comments I have just been going through the new list and seeing whether the books I've read from the old list was on the new one as well. I have 7 books less from the new list than from the old and I'm a bit surprised at some of the books that have been taken off.
Books like Middlesex, The World According to Garp, The House in Paris and City of God.
Has anybody else been comparing and been surprised by what has been taken off?

Oh yes. My average went down drastically but I plan on reading both lists.

Suzanne Moore (suzeq) | 20 comments Where are you getting the list? I found a list on Library Thing, but I don't know if it is new or old. Can you post a weblink?

Thanks :)

Karina (camomiletea) | 11 comments I'm new to this, but it bothers me that the list seems to be changing. So if I start, I might not be able to finish because of changes? Why is it changing, anyway?

Sarah Jane Could someone who has both lists post what books are taken off the old list, and what has been added? I am very curious.

The list has changed somewhat because a new edition of the book came out rather recently. Some books from the old list were taken off to include some new books in the update.

Tom (tommyro) Which list is GoodReads going to use? Or will it just add the new books to the old list so that eventually it will be 10,001 Books You Can't Possibly Read Before You Die?

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) There is an excel spreadsheet on the net that has a tab for the 2008 list and one for the items that were on the original (2006) list, but then removed. I found a reference to the spreadsheet in the "How this group works" thread for this group. It is also cool, because it will calculate totals for you.

Tom - since Goodreads does not "officially" endorse either list, I think it is up to each of us to decide what list to use.

As far as this group goes, I guess it would be up to us as a group to decide what list to use. I admit that I am confused about the group's path. I thought the group was officially using the 2006 list, however, we have had monthly selections that are not on either the 2006 or the 2008 list as far as I can tell. For example, although Truman Capote is on the list, I did not find Breakfast at Tiffany's on either list.

You said there's a spreadsheet somewhere here on how this group works? where do I find it because I want to do a count of the books I've read on the 06 list.

Tom - Sorry, I listed the wrong thread. It is about the third item or so in the "Help with the old list" thread.

It is number 463 on the 2008-list.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Thanks - I guess I missed it. Sometimes my eyes go cross-eyed!!

Lina | 1 comments I am also new to the group. Should I wait to see what list the group is going to use before I download? I don't want to start on the wrong one. I guess I'll wait til I hear something. Thanks

message 14: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie The spreadsheet is the 2008 list but it also includes the 2006 books that were dropped. So in downloading you essentially get both.

Chel | 380 comments Both lists are on this site:
www.listsofbests.com
Search for:

Dr. Peter Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (2006 edition)

..for the old list, and:

Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die - 2008 version

..for the new list.

The site lets you check mark the ones you read and gives you a percentage too. Some of you might like to do it this way.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) If you go to the groups home page and look at the 1001 books before you read section it is there. You have to click on the title of the section to get the full list of topics.

Actually, to make it easier on everyone, I think I will post something to that topic. Then it should show up on the home page because it will have a new post. Let me know if you are still having problems. I will try to walk you through it.
