Description: James is an enterprising individual with a certain deal of charm about him and his endless schemes. He is hugely resourceful, a very crafty soul able to get himself out of nearly any situation, by whatever means—however unusual they may be—necessary. That being said, what James wants, he gets. Whether it be treasure or a ship or a specific object, he rarely fails to obtain it. A brilliant plotter, James is a pirate to be feared. It is nearly impossible to figure out what he is planning to do until it is halfway completed and chaos is abound, with guns and cannons firing, swords flashing and slicing through the air and skin, ship sinking, and treasure gone. Surprisingly, James does actually care a great deal for his crew, even if he fears he cannot fully trust them anymore. Despite this fear, the pride that shines from his eyes at each triumph of his crew is unmistakeable. While a pirate to be dreaded, he will rarely catch anyone by surprise. Whatever James is, it's not subtle. He does everything with his own unique flair and a certain theatricalness. His very appearance makes a statement, what with his red coat and hat offset by the black of his hair and thin mustache and pencil-straight eyebrows. There is a certain air of mystery about him, likely brought about in part by the key worn around his neck, or the polished silver hook that sits in place of his left hand. Either way, he remains a man of many secrets, unlikely to share any of them. James has light olive skin, kissed to a golden color by constant exposure to the sun, yet marred by many scars, proof of the wars he's fought. With James, there is no creeping about the shadows; that is for cowards.
Background: James grew up in a middle class family, the second son in a family of five boys. When he was thirteen, his home was robbed, and his parents and next youngest brother Oliver were killed in the incident. They were left to take care of themselves; Tom apprenticed with a silversmith, but could only do so much to take care of the three other boys. So, James took it upon himself to join a shipping crew. Unbeknownst to him, his younger brother Peter followed along and stowed away in the hull of the ship. Shortly after discovering Peter, the ship was attacked by pirates, and to save himself and his brother, he volunteered their services to the pirate captain. Eventually, through a string of adventures and various criminal acts, he ended up a pirate captain with his own crew, and Peter as part of his crew. Three years ago, his brother Peter cut off James's hand while leading a strike against him in an attempt to take over the ship. Unable to kill his own brother, James marooned him and the traitorous boys on an island.
Relations:
» Frank Hook — father; would-be 67; deceased
» Martha Hook — mother; would-be 58; deceased
» Thomas Hook — oldest brother; 29; alive
» Oliver Hook — middle brother; would-be 25; deceased
» Theodore Hook — second youngest brother; 23; alive
» Peter Hook — youngest brother; 18; alive
Strengths: James is extremely persuasive and also an accomplished sword fighter. He is an excellent navigator, familiar with most of the ocean's nooks and crannies and peculiarities, what after his thirteen years spent on the ocean. He is also a brilliant negotiator, especially with non-humans, odd as it may be.
» Combat: James is most often seen with a saber and a pistol. He is an accomplished sword fighter, a skill he picked up in his first years aboard a pirate ship. While he is passable when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, it is decidedly not his strongest suit. In addition, he is a fair shot with a pistol.
» Magic: N/A
Weaknesses: James cannot stand the sight of his own blood. He also has a soft spot for his family. Women are another weakness of his. He grew up with only brothers, and then on a ship surrounded by only men. When confronted by a woman, particularly a witty one with a mind of her own, he seems to lose his even, cool demeanor and devolve to awkward, stumbling speech.
Goals: James loves stealing gold and other riches, particularly from government ships and officials. He wants to be the richest and most powerful pirate captain of the seas. Gaining magic and other sorts of power are things he wouldn't turn his nose up at either.
Fears: James is terrified of being forced to kill his brother Peter. He also fears that his crew does not believe in him and his ability to lead him and that someday they may stray to betray him once more.
Other: James's ship is the Sea Devil. His blood is an unusual color; a dark red so deep in color it's essentially black and also with a silver quality, leaving it very unique and easily distinguished. Thomas crafted James's hook for him.
