I'm am so glad I'm doing this buddy read - thanks Judy! I had started the book years ago but for various reason didn't get very far. Occasionally, I think the time just has to be right for one to appreciate a book - frame of mind, time in your life or whatever. I like how Seth is bringing the threads of the story together - the contrasts and divides. I really like Justice Chatterji - what a nice, smart principled guy - I'd love to include him at my dinner table for great stimulating conversation. We learn how the two halves live - the Chatterji household -- reflecting the individual, well-to-do, westernized approach in thought and action and Maan's experience living in Rasheed's village - poor, underdeveloped, traditional feudal living. And here too we see the nice. smart principled guy in Rasheed. Now, for some lighthearted comments - love Mrs. Mehra's question to Lata "are you teaching me to suck eggs?" I'm not sure about the origins of that phrase but sure brought back memories! :-) and the mangoes - yum and overdosing on them is not surprising but I was surprised it I was Mrs Mehra. Also, in Mrs. Mehra I'm beginning to see beyond the blathering, histrionic and hypochondriac woman we've seen to date - she's actually rather savvy - her reasons for turning down the candidates that Kalpana presents to date are pretty dead on - one is too rich, another that Lata will continue to be compared to the other daughters-in-law. I see Mrs. Mehra has met a very interesting candidate - this is going to be fun!

No worries Judy - life has a habit of doing that, although I hope those issues are not majorly serious. Been enjoying this week's section...

Sue I'm only half way through this section so I will return and read the above when I've finished it.

Sue I've finished this section. Arun --- wouldn't want to have him in my family!

Rasheed...I have a feeling that bad/sad things will be happening in his village after his actions re: the land maps.

Ah Mrs Mehra and the "suitable boy" candidates. This part is actually fun.

I am going to try to get some meaningful reading done in the next couple of weeks.

Sue Slowly but surely I'll get there. I do like it. Too bad I've so busy with books and have had some non-reading time.

Alison | 29 comments The only good thing about being sick is having extra reading time. I just finished this section and I really am enjoying the book. I found this section really interesting and it moved quickly for me. I actually can't wait to find out what comes next.
