Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Whats the best/ most popular / most discussion-savvy / most popular Goodreads group to submit a topic about post WWII American authors like Updike, Barthelme, Bellow, Pynchon, Roth, Irving, etc?

I dont have many groups in my Group list; and am unsure what Group I need to add to my retinue. I dont want to place this discussion somewhere that it will just languish. Like, 'Book-a-licious'.

So, what are the most truly active book-discussion groups on GR?

Tips?

Constant Reader is a very large and active group. They read classics, as well as contemporary literary fiction. Whether they have read the authors you mention, I don't know. I used to be a member, I'm not anymore, and they have gone private so it's a lot harder to see their threads/discussions or to find your way around the group.

I have spent some time (not a lot) looking around for groups I could join where people discussed the kinds of fiction books I read - and came up surprisingly empty. There are many more groups discussing the "classics" - like the 19th century classics, especially British - than groups discussing post WWII American authors.

There used to be a feature on a book page, "Groups That Shelved This Book" but GR took it away. Which is too bad because apparently a lot of people used it and they removed it without telling anyone.

I would also ask your question in Feedback Group. There may be better ways of finding groups that match up which I am not aware of.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) I'm coming back to bump this thread because for-the-life-of-me, I can't FIND a decent book discussion on Goodreads lately. Its a desert. A wasteland.

What's new in GR groups? How to find a group with a fine-grained set of characteristics?

Groups with 'large membership counts' for instance?

You tried Constant Reader and deemed it a wasteland? Because I agree there are a helluva lot of disappointing book discussions in groups, but Constant Reader had some of the better ones.

There's also NYRB but they only discuss books published by the NYRB imprint, and it's a fairly small group. They discuss one book a month.

I also had some very good discussions on Thomas Mann and Buddenbrooks when I was in the Thomas Mann group.

I don't think I've ever seen a discussion of Bellow, Roth, or Updike here. Apparently these are authors that are not read anymore. However, Pynchon and Barthelme are a different matter and you will find there is a certain type of male reverence for them. You could start by following these users and seeing if anything interesting pops up in their feeds:
