What's wrong with your name? I like it.
What's in a name? Honestly, I don't give a lot of thought to author's names. I almost assume they are pen names, not real, and thus are just a "tag" for all the books they've authored. Your name right now is perfect, because it's short and easy to remember.
Steve Downes is a perfect name for a novelist. It sounds great. I just imagine telling a friend that I just reviewed the latest Steve Downes. I would like to tell this one day. ;)

I think your name is fine. It doesn't make as much sense anymore to have a pen name. This is the information age. If someone really likes your writing then they are probably going to find out what your real name is.
