Duration: November 1 - 30, 2013

The word "dusty" has many different meanings. To create this challenge, we ran it through a Google search, and all the tasks are inspired by the results.

1. Dusty: Covered or filled with dust. Read a book that has been on your bookshelf (physically or just on your TBR list) for over a year.

2. Urban Dictionary, Dusty: describes someone or something that's ugly and/or badly dressed. Read a book with a cover you consider to be ugly.

3. Dusty (1983) - IMDb. Read a book later made into a movie.

4. Dusty: slightly gray, somewhat dark or dull in color. Read a book with a dark cover.

5. Reds fire manager Dusty Baker. Read a book about sports or in which a main character plays a sport.

6. Dusty, Washington. Read a book that takes place in the Pacific Northwest.

7. Dusty Groove: Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Brazil Latin, and more... Read a book whose title shares a word with a title of one of your favorite songs. Make sure to tell us the name of the song!

8. Dusty Armadillo - The Place Country Comes To. Read a book that involves dancing or that has an animal as a character.

9. Dusty Strings Co. Read a book that incorporates music in some way.

10. Dusty Davidson (dustyd) on Twitter. Read a book whose author has the same initial for both his or her first and last names.

A. Talbert | 2 comments This would be my first challenge and I am so excited. I was wondering I've had "World War Z" for more than a few years, would it count as a 1 & 3 or a 1 or 3?

message 23: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Way to jump right into a challenge A. Books can only count for one number for each challenge. You would have to pick 1 or 3 but you can use the same book for different challenges. So if you joined one of the quarterly challenges or the mini-challenge for November, you could use World War Z for one of those challenges too.

Have you started World War Z yet? I am currently reading it.

This book begins, "When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin." Gregor is the main character and is a beetle throughout the book. A beetle is an animal.

The word in the title is Margarita, and the song is Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. Just think of "Wastin' away again in Margaritaville..." while these characters are "Wastin' away again in Moscow!"

mussolet (sovotchka) | 615 comments Sharon, I'm in. I'm going for four :).

1. Dusty: Covered or filled with dust. Read a book that has been on your bookshelf (physically or just on your TBR list) for over a year.

message 37: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed #10 - Author w/ same initials - North and South by John Jakes. While I appreciated the story and characters, the book was much too long and would have been aided by a good editor. Glad that I read a book that was so popular back in the day but do not plan to continue the series. 3 stars

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments Challenge Complete! 4/4

1. Dusty: Covered or filled with dust. Read a book that has been on your bookshelf (physically or just on your TBR list) for over a year.

Night (The Night Trilogy, #1) by Elie Wiesel Night by Elie Wiesel 11/2/2013. It's been on my bookshelf for years, and I finally brought myself to read it. A very tragic but important memoir from the Holocaust. I'm really glad I finally read it.

3. Dusty (1983) - IMDb. Read a book later made into a movie.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold 11/5/2013 It was made into a movie in 2009 and is on my Netflix queue! Overall, I liked it. I'm not quite sure why there are so many hateful reviews on Goodreads. I dropped it to 3 stars only because I wasn't a huge fan of the ending.

6. Dusty, Washington. Read a book that takes place in the Pacific Northwest.

Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed 11/30/2013. Part of the book takes place in the Pacific Northwest, so I'm counting it. This took me a really long time to read. It definitely isn't a page turner, but I gave it 4 stars because I did think it was a very well-written memoir. There's just only so much reading about long-distance hiking that I can handle in one sitting.

8. Dusty Armadillo - The Place Country Comes To. Read a book that involves dancing or that has an animal as a character.

Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young Blood Red Road by Moira Young 11/10/2013 Finished this one late last night for one of our monthly group reads. It was an easy read, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I gave it 4 stars. The main character Saba's very helpful and highly intelligent companion, Nero, is a crow.

message 39: by Stephan (new)

Stephan | 12 comments 3. Dusty (1983) - IMDb.
The Hunger Games
Made into a movie and on my to be read list for a while, a good reason to start (and finish) it now. I had seen the movie already, I didn't like it that much. I'm glad I liked the book way better. The pacing is great it really manages to suck you in. Also you get to the hunger games itself pretty fast. Only 3 stars tho, I felt like the love part had to be crowbarred in later to make the characters more likeable or something.

message 40: by Sky (new)

Sky | 11 comments Just finished Challenge #4: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame Smith. I'm at 2/4 books.

message 41: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed #2 - Ugly Cover - Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwarz. Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters were complex and the narrative was interesting, once I figured out the author's style. However, the beginning was incredibly slow and confusing, and I felt that the male characters were treated rather flippantly. Glad I read it and would recommend to anyone wanting a challenging read. 3.5 stars

2/3

message 42: by Allison (new)

Allison | 60 comments Number 1: dusty or filled with dust- read The Artist's Way which I have been reading since June of this year.

message 43: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed #4 - Dark Cover - We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan. An amazing and inspiring story of courageous nurses! Coming from a family of nurses, I really appreciated the author's thorough research and obvious dedication to her subjects. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars
