I've been asked for some reviews lately. Which I will be doing in a few months again when I have more time. But I've been sent some really strange books and also books that really don't interest me so I've had to compile a list that I won't take.

For instance someone sent me a book when I was first starting out titled something like 'How to get over gambling addiction' which, how would I review? It deals with such a specific audience, lol.

Is there any genre you prefer not to read?

Hmm I think you nailed it well here. Genre specific books: I'd have to be in the mood to even touch it depending on the subject.

Aside from that, Poetry. I admire the people who write them but it's not something I 'understand'. To me poetry is like painting. Some people can get to the core of it and see something completely different. I see rhymes and that's it.

Non-fiction such as memoir is another one I avoid.

Dawn J Stevens (dawnjstevens) | 51 comments Romance. It bores me. No offence to our romance writers, but I just can't stomach half the scenes in a romance novel. Plus, when they are only romance and nothing more, the story line tends to be bland and uninspiring. Girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl marries boy. Meh. Give me conflicts that have nothing to do with finding a man, and story lines with more than "hunky guys".

That's just me! I know some really enjoy romance, so not saying there's not a market for it. Just... not for me.

Dawn J Stevens (dawnjstevens) | 51 comments Sci-fi! Yes that too... when it has to deal with future and aliens, I'm not interested. Excessive battle scenes and war I'm not to keen on either.

True, plain romance books get boring. One maybe two a year for me is the max I can do. After that they tend to be repetitive.

I love a touch of romance in a story, not a touch of story in romance. :P

I love Sci-fi but I am very specific in that genre. I'm not a fan of space opera, hard sci-fi, or military sci-fi where big battles take place in space etc. Although I love Firefly/Startrek/Starwars, on TV shows or movies, those are not books I would read, (I never read any as a matter of fact and my husband has boxes full of them.) I'm more of a planetary sci-fi, where the stories take place on different world, as they are more related to fantasy (or sometimes action/horror).

In fact, my taste in books differs a lot from my taste in tv shows and movies. I'm much less picky in the latter.

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments I tend to like anything with a good story with twists and turns. Genre doesn't matter much, but there are so many books that are straightforward and boring to me. I need a surprise. I tend to read more fantasy and sci fi, but some of my favorite authors don't really fall into either of those categories. I do tend to stay away from romance because they tend ti lack those intricate storylines that I love.

I hate anything that is overblown and full of waffle, to me a book has to be to the point and pertinent not just full of page fillers.

Topaz Winters (topazwinters) Can't stand scifi and dystopian books. Maybe I'm a bit biased against them, but I have only read one that I really, really loved.

Brian Klueter (brianleeklueter) | 3 comments I don't really read Romance or Western. Although I've never actually tried to get into them before. It's more because I have too much stuff I want to read already haha.

Carl Self-help in nonfiction. But in fiction I will no longer say never about anything. Why? Recently I read an erotica romance and loved it. I wanted that MC to find love and not fall for the idiot. What a surprise.

Harmony Kent (harmonyk) @Carl - Never say never ... so true :) I've had some surprises from time to time with stuff I wouldn't normally read. As a reviewer I give any book my best effort, what's more important is that it's well written and proof read - my pet hate is trying to read a book that is full of typos and spelling mistakes - ugh. As in my writing, I'm a multi-genre (and prolific) reader :)
