Sarah | 1 comments Hello everyone!

I love fantasy books where a character discovers they have magical abilities. I'm not very fussy apart from that, and can do YA or high fantasy or whatever really. I've read Eragon and Harry Potter but would love to hear any and all other suggestions you have for books that do the whole coming-of-age/discovering magic abilities thing.

Also, when I was young I read a book about a boy who had learned to control the elements and he fell in love with a girl who spent time in some kind of time capsule and aged by seven years, and her brother was evil because he was possessed after a shipwreck. I know that's all very vague but does anyone know what this book is? I loved it so much but I've not been able to find it since.

Thanks so much for your help :)

Hi Sarah

For coming of age dicovering magic I would suggest
Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1) by Leigh Bardugo Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare The Lost Gate (Mither Mages, #1) by Orson Scott Card The Peculiar (The Peculiar, #1) by Stefan Bachmann
Johannes Cabal The Necromancer (Johannes Cabal, #1) by Jonathan L. Howard (not quite YA, but great book)
The Alchemyst (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #1) by Michael Scott The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

I hope that helps!
Sorry I don't know the book you are referring to :(

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments Hi Sarah!

A lot of books by Mercedes Lackey have characters who discover they have magical abilities. The ones I can think of right now are:
Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey Foundation (Valdemar Collegium Chronicles, #1) by Mercedes Lackey Arrows of the Queen (Heralds of Valdemar, #1) by Mercedes Lackey Take a Thief (Heralds of Valdemar, #5) by Mercedes Lackey Exile's Honor (Heralds of Valdemar, #6) by Mercedes Lackey

Other books I can think of are:
The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder Flesh and Fire (Vineart War #1) by Laura Anne Gilman The Elvenbane (Halfblood Chronicles, #1) by Andre Norton

Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, #1) by Tamora Pierce --This entire series deals with a group of friends who learn to use their magic. I can't remember if they knew they had magic before they were found, though.

And if you don't mind going a little old-school:
Pawn of Prophecy (The Belgariad, #1) by David Eddings The Sword of Shannara (The Original Shannara Trilogy #1) by Terry Brooks

Trisha Johnson Hi Sarah, I just got done reading the entire Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins - its YA, but it was a pretty good series, and I do recommend it. Hex Hall Demonglass Spell Bound

message 7: by Anni (new)

Anni | 2 comments I loved Vampire Acadamy and Bloodlines

message 8: by Corey (new)

Corey (coreyhuffman) | 389 comments The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) by Lev Grossman The Magiciansby Lev Grossman is really good as well as the sequel The Magician King (The Magicians, #2) by Lev Grossman but it has some mature themes, that you may want to consider before choosing.

I would second The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima and the whole Seven Realms series as well.

message 9: by Erica (new)

Erica Guzzo | 2 comments I'd recommend the Inkheart Trilogy. It's considered a YA.

pml | 325 comments Tamora Pierce has some very good books with that. Try her Circle of Magic series, Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, #1) by Tamora Pierce or the Immortals quartet, with Wild Magic (Immortals, #1) by Tamora Pierce .
Diana Wynne Jones is fantastic with a great sense of humor. Especially her Chrestomanci series, in publication order it begins with Charmed Life (Chrestomanci, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones . Her most recent (last book) is The Islands of Chaldea by Diana Wynne Jones .

Also try:
Sherwood Smith's Wren quartet Wren to the Rescue by Sherwood Smith . The heroine for her Dobrenica series is perhaps a little old for what you want (just out of grad school), but Coronets and Steel by Sherwood Smith is good.
Andrea K. Höst's The Touchstone Trilogy by Andrea K. Höst is gateway fantasy meets sci-fi. Aussie high school girl accidentally walks into a different world, eventually discovers powers and saves the world - with psychic space ninjas! Her Stained Glass Monsters (Eferum, #1) by Andrea K. Höst and Hunting by Andrea K. Höst are more purely fantasy.

message 15: by Shelby (new)

Shelby | 26 comments Something Witchy This Way Comes (Something Witchy, #1) by Veronica Blade Ignite (Midnight Fire, #1) by Kaitlyn Davis Shaken (Mind Reader, #1) by Susan Hatler Enchant Me by Anne Violet

I hope you find something you like!

message 16: by Damian (new)

Damian | 2 comments I'm totally recommending The Ankhs: Red Marks The Child by Amira Awaad.

I love anything/everything fantasy related. This is so "new" and fresh! Plus, the setting is ancient Egypt, and the author is Egyptian!

message 17: by Bella (new)

Bella | 34 comments I would definitely recommend Maria V Snyder's books set in fantasy world Ixia. I love them, Poison Study is the first of all the series.

message 18: by Maria (new)

Maria (marmalade4evs) Most definitely the Gone series.
Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant Hunger (Gone, #2) by Michael Grant Lies (Gone, #3) by Michael Grant Plague (Gone, #4) by Michael Grant Fear (Gone, #5) by Michael Grant Light (Gone, #6) by Michael Grant
it's so amazing and I hope you will love it!

I really liked Sabriel (Abhorsen, #1) by Garth Nix and The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil, #1) by Soman Chainani

Barbara Sophia | 1 comments I'm enjoying The Abhorsen/The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix
and the Septimus Heap books by Angie Sage

message 21: by Syndiciate (last edited Jun 11, 2018 11:15PM) (new)

Syndiciate The Belgariad, Kingkiller Chronicles and Wheel of Time have the MC's discovering they have magical abilities, though that's not the main focus of the series.
