A Disappearance in Drury Lane discussion

At last, I was able to procure the latest in the Captain Lacey books. Ms. Gardner did not disappoint in any way. Captain Lacey finally married to the estimable former Lady Breckenridge, is once again asked to help with a mystery. The disappearance of a very well-known actress and friend to Marianne. Even with marriage looming, his inquisitive mind and honorable personality cannot ignore a friend's request for help. As always, he is a magnet for violence most often than not to his person, but with such good friends as Grenville and his sharp-witted wife, we soon see Gabriel once again doing Bow Streets work for them. He now has to not only solve the case, but clear himself of fraudulent charges of murder and dodge the virulent pursue of a Bow street runner whose goal in life is to take down the nefarious Mr. Denis and anyone in his immediate sphere i.e. Captain Lacey. With many twists and turns, but not leaving out the tender moments between Gabriel, his wife and newly found very intelligent daughter. Ms. Gardner balances the story just right to keep her reader slightly off balanced as to who the criminal(s) were. My one problem with the characters is Marianne and the way she is allowed to treat gentlemen who seem to be above her station in life. I say "seem to be" because, we do not know anything of her life before meeting up with Captain Lacey in the apartments above Ms. Beltran's bakery. Her speech patterns suggest middle if not upper crust and she is wholly against giving trust yet expects it from a gentleman who has gone out of his way to protect her and pay for the care of a son who he has not even met. I pray, in the next issue(s), she will be seen with some reasoning and/or redeemable qualities. For now, she just strikes me as being spoiled and somewhat childish. I look forward to finding out just how Gabriella has taken after her father even though, she did not grow with his presence after the first two years of her life. Begs the question of nurture vs nature. It was hard for me to read in one sitting as I knew it would be a while before I had the pleasure of reading the next installment however, I could not stay away too long.
