In my family, we played board games often, but almost always when the power went out. Read a book where the cover depicts a scene lit by candlelight, firelight or a flashlight.

This is clever! "with the or a" would also work, ie with the or a knife.

In clue, you move between different locations. Read a book that is set in multiple locations.

Read a book where the total number of pages can be found, in any order, in the first publication date of that same book. For example a book published in 2013 could have a total page count of 310, 213, 201, 320, etc.
Read a book that has at least 2 colors in the words of the title on the cover. Examples:



A book with a group of suspects stuck together in one location -- in a mansion, haunted house, on a cruise, a hotel or hotel convention, a spaceship, a rehab center, submarine, reality show set i(as n some sort of Big Brother, Bachelor or Survivor type of scenario), etc.
A book with the discovery of a dead body in the opening chapter (regardless of genre).
A book where the murder weapon is initially unknown.


The game Clue has many different possible outcomes, and the movie was written with three distinct endings (in theaters, they actually showed the different endings in rotation, so you could see it twice and get different ones).

There's already been controversy around these games. Read a book with a GLBT character (due to Russia's anti-gay laws) or with a traitor or spy (due to Russia's asylum to Edward Snowden).
Let's not forget Valentine's Day in February- Title's letters found in valentine; a book with a heart or candy on the cover; a book shelved as romance, or one about a real life couple

Out with the old in with the new: read one of your top 10 oldest on your TBR and 1 of your newest on your TBR
Black History month is in Feb. Read a book with an character who is black Or a non-fiction book about one.

Groundhog Day- read a book with sun or a shadow on the cover, or in honor of the movie- reread a book :-)


So, read books related to:
~ the music (Tchaikovsky)
~ the characters in the story (Clara (or Marie), the nutcracker prince, the sugarplum fairy, the rats, rat king and soldiers, the snow king and queen, and the variations)
~ the ballet
~ glorious costumes
~ ballet terms, such as pas-de-deux, solo, corps de ballet, tour, arabesque, attitude, and so on...

Many jokes have been made about giving fruitcakes to relatives you don’t care for. Read a book with the genre, Humor, listed on the main page, OR read a book in which ALL the words in the title begin with the letters found in FRUITCAKE.

I’m always interested to read what other well known authors have to say about a particular book.
1. Read any book of your choice.
2. Read a book by an author that has made an endorsement somewhere on the front or back cover of book #1 for this task.

Feb 14 2014 marks the last day of the Chinese lunar New Year celebration (Lantern Festival). In older times, this is a day when young people would wander the streets looking for true love and matchmakers would be busy trying to pair couples.

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of Winter. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes, they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges.
Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!
The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10, and 15 point tasks. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
