It's time to start thinking about fun tasks for the Winter Challenge. The bonus theme is "A Year of Board Games: Clue"

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of Winter. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes, they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10, and 15 point tasks. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Jennifer W | 466 comments Whoops! I missed that Kathy already made that suggestion!

In my family, we played board games often, but almost always when the power went out. Read a book where the cover depicts a scene lit by candlelight, firelight or a flashlight.

message 8: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments Book can spell clue in the title (not necessarily sequentially)

This is clever! "with the or a" would also work, ie with the or a knife.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Gone with the Wind Girl With a Pearl Earring

message 10: by Susan A (new)

message 15: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 466 comments This winter, my family and I are traveling by train to Idaho for my step-brother's wedding! I've never been to Idaho or the Rocky Mountains.

Read a book set someplace you've never been, has a train or mountains on the cover, or where a wedding is a key plot point to the story.

message 16: by Deana (new)

Deana (ablotial) | 276 comments Read a book featuring a winter sport (think winter olympics, but also other winter sports) skiing, luge, sled dogs, ice hockey, curling, figure skating, sledding, etc.

winter is a great time to curl up in a blanket in front of the fire with a good book. Read a book showing a fire or a blanket on the cover.

Read a book whose author's initials are consecutive in Winter: WI, IN, NT, TE, ER

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 161 comments Whenever I play Clue with my kids, I think that the mansion is the best place for a ghost story. So read a book with a ghost/haunting!

Christina (AKA Babbling) (babblingbookreviews) | 855 comments I love the movie "Clue"!

Read a book written by an author whose first or last name matches the first or last name of one of the following actors from the movie:

Christopher Lloyd....Prof. Plum
Madeline Kahn....Mrs. White

message 22: by Lorna (new)

Read a book where the total number of pages can be found, in any order, in the first publication date of that same book. For example a book published in 2013 could have a total page count of 310, 213, 201, 320, etc.

Read a book that has at least 2 colors in the words of the title on the cover. Examples: Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick and This Is Not a Test Stories of Disaster by Students of the School for Democracy and Leadership in New York

A book with a group of suspects stuck together in one location -- in a mansion, haunted house, on a cruise, a hotel or hotel convention, a spaceship, a rehab center, submarine, reality show set i(as n some sort of Big Brother, Bachelor or Survivor type of scenario), etc.

A book with the discovery of a dead body in the opening chapter (regardless of genre).

A book where the murder weapon is initially unknown.

message 25: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (deja05) | 100 comments Since you solve or "unlock" a mystery in Clue, read a book with a lock or a key in the title or on the cover page

message 26: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments For a low-point task:
The game Clue has many different possible outcomes, and the movie was written with three distinct endings (in theaters, they actually showed the different endings in rotation, so you could see it twice and get different ones).

Read a choose-your-own-adventure book.
---

They recently updated Clue with new characters and jobs. Read a book that's an "update" on an old story (ex. Troy for The Iliad)

---

Read a book with at least three of the traditional "colors" on the cover: scarlet, white, (peacock) blue, plum, (mustard) yellow, or green.

---

Read a book with the letters b-o-d-y in the title.

---

Read a book whose narrator has the same profession as one of the characters from Clue (maid, professor, colonel, etc.).

---

And I'm all for the 5pt tasks being the "10 Significant Things" list again this season! I love those :D

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Cozy and Warm

Read a chunky classic. (ex. War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Don Quixote)

New Crime Series

Read a crime series that is new to you, book must be part of a series that contains more than 2 books.

message 28: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 466 comments The Olympics are being held in Russia, read a book set in Russia.

There's already been controversy around these games. Read a book with a GLBT character (due to Russia's anti-gay laws) or with a traitor or spy (due to Russia's asylum to Edward Snowden).

Groundhog Day- read a book with sun or a shadow on the cover, or in honor of the movie- reread a book :-)

message 35: by Soelo (new)

Soelo | 117 comments Winter means cold temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. 40 degrees below zero on the Celsius scale is the same as 40 below on the Fahrenheit scale. Read a book where the number of pages has both a 4 and a 0.

message 36: by Marie-Anne (new)

Marie-Anne | 950 comments Early winter is for me always the time for the Nutcracker ballet. I volunteer with costumes for our local production, in it's 26th showing.
So, read books related to:
~ the music (Tchaikovsky)
~ the characters in the story (Clara (or Marie), the nutcracker prince, the sugarplum fairy, the rats, rat king and soldiers, the snow king and queen, and the variations)
~ the ballet
~ glorious costumes
~ ballet terms, such as pas-de-deux, solo, corps de ballet, tour, arabesque, attitude, and so on...

message 37: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 526 comments Festive Fruitcakes
Many jokes have been made about giving fruitcakes to relatives you don’t care for. Read a book with the genre, Humor, listed on the main page, OR read a book in which ALL the words in the title begin with the letters found in FRUITCAKE.

Pants are in
On Dec. 29, 1852, Emma Snodgrass was arrested in Boston for wearing pants. Read a book that shows a female wearing pants.

Newbery Awards
The Newbery Awards are announced every year in January during the American Library Association midwinter conference. Read a past Newbery winner or honor book from the following list: http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/...

“Wow, this guy can write”
I’m always interested to read what other well known authors have to say about a particular book.
1. Read any book of your choice.

2. Read a book by an author that has made an endorsement somewhere on the front or back cover of book #1 for this task.

message 40: by Rochella (new)

Rochella (rosesbookgarden) | 109 comments December 5th is 'Sinterklaas' in the Netherlands (Santa Claus is based on him). Right now a discussion is going on about 'Zwarte Piet' (black Peter), which is the helper of Sinterklaas. People think Black Peter is racist and is just a slave to Sinterklaas.
Read a book featuring a slave or slaves.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

New Years: resolution time!

As a New Years resolution, read a book from a genre that you would never read from.

Example:
You usually read romance--> read a horror book
Or
You usually read YA or UF --> read a old Classic

message 45: by Pamela Su (new)

Pamela Su (thebluebaroness) | 247 comments The winter season is typically a time when families get together (Christmas, Chinese New Year).
A) Read a non-fiction book about dealing with family OR
B) Read a novel where family is an important theme of the story.

* Read a book with one of the following words in the title: new, old, year

message 47: by Pamela Su (new)

Pamela Su (thebluebaroness) | 247 comments Looking for Love
Feb 14 2014 marks the last day of the Chinese lunar New Year celebration (Lantern Festival). In older times, this is a day when young people would wander the streets looking for true love and matchmakers would be busy trying to pair couples.

Read a book where an arranged or forced marriage takes place

AND

Read a book where an autonomous or "love match" marriage takes place

This can be fiction or non-fiction.

message 48: by Natalie (new)
