I really didn't like Jericho's secret, but that was about it.
I wish the sequel came out faster. April 2014 is still so long away, especially since I finished it a year ago.
Do you think this book is more for adults? Or is it a YA book just because the age of the girls is 17?

I think that is is for an older YA reader but adapts well to younger ones also.
The setting was nicely done and I felt like I go a bit of a history lesson as well as a fantasy read.

Then there was Jericho, his secret was really, really weird and I am not sure I liked it,I would have preferred maybe a more personal secret.
Overall though it was a really good book book that I seriously enjoyed.

I know that Evie seemed snotty and bratty in the beginning. However, she really developed after that and became a real character. She built up amazing relationships with the characters that were also realistic. In particular her relationship with Sam appealed to me. I know that most of you want Jericho and Evie to get together, but I enjoy her dialogue and emotions with Sam.
The 1920's slang might have been a tad annoying at times, but it set up the scene very well.
Then there was Jericho...I'm not saying that I don't like him, but the character development was very odd. For one, his secret. I'm not against it. I just think it didn't relate to the plot very well and was out of the blue. I think it added character to him, which I liked. However, I felt like his secret just did not fit in with the rest of the plot at all and I was disappointed.
Overall, I loved this book. It was full of drama, fantasy, history, love and anything else you could possibly want. I recommend this book to anyone who has not read it because it was amazing.
But you might have to sleep with the lights on.
I read this book pretty fast for as long as it was. Today I read 5 1/2 hours to finish it up! I liked it. I have a friend who tried to read it and just couldn't get into it at all.
I really like that the book ended and wrapped up the story. Yes there is still a main story that will carry onto book 2, but I am so glad that we don't have to wait for some long drawn out story. I also like that this didn't read as our typical YA book. Crazy love triangle, teens in school... that is why it reads to me more like an adult novel personally. Yes there is sort of a love triangle with Sam Jericho and Evie. But not a cheesy one to me. I do like Evie with Sam myself too.
I think Jericho's secret was kind of cool. I think it added a little steampunk element to the story. I almost was thinking he was some type of Frankenstein's monster. I like Memphis' and Isaiah's stories. But I didn't think that it was ever really tied in to the main story going on yet. Really the only way it was tied was Memphis and Theta. But this multiple POV allows us to almost read two different stories at once. I like how this book is showing come controversial topics for the 1920s , interracial relationships and homosexuality. It even brings up rape and abortion which might get young adults talking about these subjects.
I wish that Evie would've found out eventually that she was the one who released Naughty John. She did it at her party with the Ouija board and I don't think she ever knew. I played with the Ouija board growing up sometimes. But when I was in college we got real serious with it. Now some of you may believe this and some of you may not.... but it got a little crazy there for a little while. We would play and the Ouija board would only move around when I played. So all my friends always made me play. One night some friends (I lived in the dorms) came up to my room to play and we told them that when I played the board would go nuts. They didn't believe me. So we told them to ask it a question that they knew I didn't know (they weren't actually playing on the board with us). So they asked it what their dorm room number was. And sure enough... it answered correctly. Then one night we were playing and it spelled out someone's name and right after that the phone rang and it was that person! Other crazy things happened as well. Anyways... I was starting to get a little scared from the whole thing, I came back to my dorm room from work and turned on the light and my rosary broke out of no where! I was sooo scared. I went straight to my friend's apartment and slept there and never played again. Have any of you had any Ouija board experiences?????
OK... back to the story. I wonder if in these dreamscapes where the Diviners keep meeting.. if they feel a pull to each other and this will be a factor in future books??

I love spooky and eerie books.. I would recommend this book too!

I thought this book was incredibly creepy and did a great job of using the setting to add to the dramatic nature of the story. There were a lot of polar opposites in this book, and it created an interesting contrast.
Evie was annoying for quite a while, but she grew so much as the book progressed. I loved the secondary characters as well, and wished they had more direct involvement in the whole Naughty John thing. I was annoyed that the entire string of murders took a backseat at the end of the novel - it seemed totally irrelevant to whatever is going to happen next, and it was annoying that such a creepy and interesting story just ended up not being important.
Overall I really enjoyed this though!

I agree with everything Theresa said! I thought Evie was a little too much to take in the beginning, but she got SO much better as the book went on. I really liked how creepy this book was, and it scared me a little when I was reading it at night. The 20's slang got on my nerves a little and felt forced sometimes... and I didn't like Jericho's secret, nor do I like him and Evie being together. His character was probably the only one I didn't LOVE in this whole book (and there were a lot of people!!).
I really loved this book and can't wait to see if the Diviners team up like superheros to fight evil in the future. I hope they do!
This was definitely one of my favorite books that I read this year!
PS- Angie: It wasn't Evie who had the party with the Ouija board in the beginning. That was some NYC socialite-type girl who didn't end up being in the book again. If I'm remembering correctly.

Ohhh.. hummmm... I returned the book to the library so I can't check. But that would make sense then as to why Evie didn't remember it.
