Alanna | 2 comments I was hoping for some ideas of what to do with the ones I don't want to keep. I used to pass them on via Bookmooch.com but I am not active on there anymore. I know libraries and bookstores are out. Is there something that most people do that I am not privy to? Can they be put in recycling? It would kill me to put them in the garbage!

Recycling is the best.

Alanna | 2 comments Thanks Ann! I wasn't sure if paperbacks could be thrown in recycling - I'm glad to hear they can!

Kalen | 218 comments I agree with Ann. I usually strip them first and throw away the covers unless it's a matte cover. Thanks for asking, Alanna.

My library has recycling dumpsters that we throw paperbacks into that aren't acceptable for our book sale - including ARCs. Still benefits the library.

I usually wait for a while after a book has been published and put them in the Little Free Library (http://littlefreelibrary.org/) in my neighborhood.

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Just once I like to see what one of these things look like. I am not a collector but are they valuable? Are they copyrighted?

Kalen | 218 comments Most look like a paperback edition of the book, but with additional copy on the cover indicating that it's an advanced reading copy--and not for resale. The back cover typically includes marketing/PR plans.

They are definitely copyrighted and are the property of the publisher. Valuable? Depends on the author and the book but most collectors I know want the galley as part of their collection, particularly if its signed.
