Amber, very, very sorry about your dog, I know exactly how you feel, we too, have pets that are a big part of our family and when they pass on, they leave a hole in our lives. Big hug!

Rebecca (bd200789) I got the trial two or three months ago. I think they have a pretty good selection. I have found a few new-to-me authors by using it.

message 306: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (sleepykitty) | 129 comments Thanks Rebecca! I have many to read right now but I will probably try it in a few months :)

It's a sad, sad day - my local used bookstore has closed. That leaves only one little bookstore in town, and it's in the mall. I hate malls. And I can't afford full-price books anyway. :(

*shakes fist at heavens* WHY?! WHYYYYY?!?!?!

*sobs*

Brenda (aka Grandma) | 278 comments Faye, I know you weren't fond of American Gods, but I wanted to share this quote from it anyway:

“What I say is, a town isn't a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it's got a bookstore it knows it's not fooling a soul.”
― Neil Gaiman, American Gods

That is so true!

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) All we have where I live is a Hastings, Barnes & noble and booksamillion for bookstores. sorry yours went away, faye.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well. I went to go see Heaven is for real at the drive in last night and it was a pretty good film. I also completed my YA Horror Fantasy web serial that I wrote on goodreads recently so it ended with 12 chapters. I hope everyone who will check it out enjoys it cuz I had fun writing it and may do another weekly web serial here on goodreads in the future. Don't know what of though.

Hugs, Tea, and Sympathy to Faye!! I'm so sorry for your loss.

I used to feel so opulent with the plethora of bookstores in my area, but even here it has dwindled to nearly nothing. Lots of overpriced cars here, though. :{

Amber,
Where on Goodreads can I find your book?

message 315: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Go here Renee and please like the chapters and let me know what you think of my online web serial the AbyssFantastical A YA Horror fantasy serial and I hope you enjoy it. There are 12 chapters in all and the main villain is inspired by one of my favorite actors Robert Englund:

Reading (and Goodreads subsequently) has taken a massive downturn for the latter half of this month. I blame revision and being unable to find a book I can sink my teeth into!

Mom Mode (sorry):

Try to stop drinking coffee. Drink OJ instead and/or take Vitamin C. Sleep as much as you can. If you're a tea drinker and it's a head-cold, try honey and lemon instead of cream. If it's stomach, remember BRAT... Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.

I always got sick for exams. It's miserable. :(

message 324: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) get well soon Holly. so how is everyone? Just wondering why I had an author I thought was a friend unfriend me on fb when all I was to him was kind and supported him in his short films and stuff. oh well. It's his loss.

I was trying to think of a summer-ish colour that we hadn't used before!

I'm not a massive football fan, but I do enjoy the World Cup. We are getting together with our neighbours for a barbecue to watch the first England match. It's always a rather sociable affair :)

The world hates me!

Because I take forever picking books, and I want to be really strict with myself when it comes to reading my Summer List, I thought I'd number them all and use a random number generator to pick what book to read next.

What did it give me?
Moby-Dick.

Typical.

33 pages in and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Then again, I haven't got to the whaling part yet...

Thanks for the good luck wishes. I'll definitely need them!

Don't eat anything for at least an hour before the whale-gutting chapter... *shudder*

Holly-

I totally loved Moby Dick! It's insanely long (Good you're starting at the beginning of the summer), but endlessly interesting. I thought Ishmael's observations were fairly droll much of the time, and learned a great deal about the life of whalers, which was actually pretty interesting. You should know the Big Richard doesn't show up until the end, not as a spoiler, but so you can relax and enjoy the unfolding of the story.

I'm about 150 pages and I've just hit the whaling section. The writing is actually easier than I thought it would be, and I am rather enjoying it.

He weirdly placed a few pages in play format randomly in the middle of a chapter? I don't know why. Almost reminded me of my experience reading Ulysses!

I'm glad I was strong enough to say 'hell yes, I'm going to stick by the number given to me', it's better, and easier than expected!

I find that most "difficult" books turn out that way! I never listen anymore when people say that a book is "hard." In my world, that usually translates into "hard to put down." ;)

I didn't find Moby Dick difficult, but the detailed whale gutting scarred me for life. Save the whales, people! Save the whales!! :P

Same with Les Miserables... not a difficult book to read, and I absolutely loved it, but the Paris sewage chapter? One of those things that I wish I could erase from my mind, let's put it that way, heh!

message 338: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay (sleepykitty) | 129 comments Faye, there's scene fro. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle that I read 13 years ago that scarred me for life, too. I totally get what you mean. Similarly, the end of Devils Arithmetic in sixth grade, will never leave me.

Yes, it's an odd lull, isn't it? I hope it's because people are enjoying the great outdoors and are away from their computers. :)

Aw, that's too bad! We had a doozy of a storm here yesterday, but other than that it's been pretty nice.

message 343: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments The weather has been very strange. We even had tornado warnings yesterday and that is really uncommon here! On the bright side, it allowed me to read an entire book last night.

Are you in Ontario? That was a crazy storm!

message 345: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) It has been storming all week. Torrential rainfall, followed by hot and humid. Hurricane season is just starting, the longest five months of the year. We have been blest the last four or five years with quiet seasons. That just adds to the tension--waiting to see what Mother Nature has in store this season. But I still would prefer a hurricane to a tornado. You have a chance to get away from a hurricane--you know it's coming, you have some idea where it is going.

Michael, I hope that you don't have any hurricanes or tornados!

Holly - congrats on being FREE! I hope your exams went well. Now the most stressful thing of your summer will be picking which book to read next.
