You sure nailed it. Lately, I am spending more time promoting, and having fun here than editing my second book. And I am even afraid of thinking further down the road. I'd like to have 6 hands and at least 10 pair of eyes. Of course than I would be a curiosity and maybe have even less time to do what I need but I am sure you get what I mean.
I don't have a solution but I will check this thread eagerly to get all the help I can get! Thanks for posting this!

Jack Strandburg | 51 comments Absolutely do, Kevin! The promotion has been killing me - to the point where I've lost momentum and confidence to start writing, although today I told myself, put in 2 hours on my novel, 1 hour on fast fiction, 1 hour on my short story, and 1 hour on blogging. I was able to get some writing done, but promoting has been hogging my time, not so much active promoting, but reading 1,000,000 sites and sources trying to figure out how best to promote - and I still haven't had a lot of luck. I think the only way to "solve" it is to alternate days, focusing on nothing but writing one day, promotion the next, day, or even make it a weekday, weekend thing. Just trying to keep up with FB posts and make sure I keep networking is a lot of time itself! No rest for the writer! I guess I should be thankful my only "music" commitment is choir practice on Tuesday nights. LOL.

When it comes to promotion I think you should find something that works really well for you, but I think what ever it will take up alot of time. I've been sick alot the last couple of months and I know that people realise when I'm not on, and my tweets get alot less attention. What ever you do, just keep at it constantly.

Its just trying to find that balance. I think I could work a lot more efficently if I could afford an editor. So now its all about time management.

Next week I'm going to get back into my routine that getting ill so much destroyed. On a perfect day I want to get up at 6am to read messages/clean up on goodreads if it needs it. Edit from 8am to about 5pm (check twitter once an hour) Study from about 7pm till 9pm. Then social network until about 1am.

But I don't really know how well my book will do of course :]

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments The solution is to just do what you can when you can. I work a 9-6 job, my mom has cancer, and I also make enough money playing poker to pay the rent every month. All of those things take time away from writing, but there's nothing I can do about it. That's why I have to be able to do everything on my phone or tablet. I am always away from home trying to take care of one responsibility or another. It helps to have apps that manage multiple social media sites at once. I don't really have much of a following though. Twitter is probably the best, but I have less than 500 followers there.

Michael Pearce (michaeltinkerpearce) | 91 comments Sometimes it's tough to write and still have a real life. Lately I've tried to focus on writing, but things come up. I've mostly stopped promoting our book and just letting things ride while I take care of business and write the next one. Usually I do social media in the morning, at lunch and in the late afternoon/early evening. The rest of time is either writing, the workshop or running errands. After dinner is usually time with Linda, though sometimes writing does intrude there a bit.

Wayne Elsner | 13 comments I think I know how you all feel. I am currently writing the sequel to my fantasy novel, editing the second book in my Tannion series, working with my publisher on releasing the first book in the Tannion series and trying to get a handle on what it takes to market it. Meanwhile I am on day 60 of a 70 day tour that has already taken us to twenty countries and we are just getting started. I need more time.

@Brian sorry your mum is sick.

Its kinda another reason I wanted to create this group. I know alot of people don't have the time to promote like I do, so I hope the group is a nice place for people to talk about their books and the author they are with an interactive audience of other authors.

When A Dance With Fury is with beta readers I'll be doing something new that will hopefully bring more people to the group :3

I have been very busy the past several weeks and haven't been on here. D8 Reading this for class, doing that project for that class, writing my philosophy of education, preparing a speech...

Amidst the business of being in college, I at least try to keep my story in mind every day. Sometimes I learn something in class that can apply to my story. There are a few concepts from my sociology class that I can kind of 'twist' and use in my story. :3

At lead being an English Major makes me have to do quite a bit of writing. It's academic writing, but it's still writing. :3

So during periods of busyness, I try to keep my novel in mind and write things down. :3 Plus I have music that can semi-relate to the story, so that helps, too.

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments I completely understand. I have kind of worked out a schedule where I do my social media and promoting early in the day for a couple of hours, then spend the rest of the day writing. That seems to keep me from being overwhelmed by it all.
