What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

The only sure thing I remember about the book series I'm looking for is there is a man with swords for arms that attacks the protagonist.
Other things I remember but might be from a different book is the protagonist goes to a swamp to learn something from a guy that lives in it.
Also I think there was a dragon.
I'm also pretty sure there was a female that becomes the protagonists girlfriend later in the story.
Also the books are about swords and magic. In a fantasy world.
I read the story around 2004 and I don't think it was an old series

OMG I THINK THIS IS IT!!!! thank you so much Kris. i got to buy the book and start reading it to make sure but this sounds like its the right story. after i read a summary about him being blind i was like 99% sure this was the correct book
