Hi Fiona, I just watched the first 2 in this series and they are terrific. Netflix in the US is a great source for British TV that isn't broadcast on BBC America or one of our other stations.

I too thought the stories might be from something P. D. James wrote but that was probably because of Martin Shaw - who I really like.

You mention liking the setting in the past and I think that makes writers work harder at the story since you can't cover up plot flaws or distract the audience with modern special effects and the bells and whistles of hi-tech police techniques.
